Curator’s statement
Hilton Head Island is one of those destinations that feels relaxing the moment you arrive. I love how family-friendly it is while still offering beautiful beaches, amazing biking paths, great food, and a slower pace that makes it easy to truly unwind. It’s a place that creates simple but meaningful memories—bike rides to the beach, sunset walks, ice cream stops, and quality time together. For me, it represents the kind of easy, laid-back coastal getaway that families return to year after year.

Things to do on Hilton Head Island

Nothing better than seeing the pure excitement of a child running straight into the ocean!
Bike around the island
One of the best things about Hilton Head is how bike-friendly it is. The island has miles of scenic bike paths, and riding to the beach, shops, or restaurants is part of the experience.
Go deep-sea fishing
One of our family’s favorite memories was taking the kids deep-sea fishing and catching sharks. They still talk about it! It’s such a fun and unique activity for families looking to get out on the water and try something different.
Catch crabs in the inlets or on the Crabber J
My kids absolutely loved catching crabs in the shallow inlets around the island, and the Crabber J is another really fun family activity. It’s interactive, laid-back, and one of those simple vacation memories kids remember for years.
Enjoy fresh seafood and waterfront dining
Hilton Head has so many great casual coastal restaurants. Some of my favorite vacation moments there are simply enjoying seafood or a drink outside near the water.
Take a sunset walk on the beach
The beaches are wide, flat, and perfect for long walks. Sunset is one of the prettiest and most relaxing times to be out there. Insider tip: Bring flashlights and glow sticks for fun at night!
Explore Shelter Cove
Shelter Cove has restaurants, marina views, live music during parts of the year, and a really fun atmosphere for families in the evenings. My kids still talk about the animal balloons and face painting!
Go kayaking or paddleboarding
The calm waterways around Hilton Head make it a great spot for beginner-friendly kayaking and paddleboarding while enjoying the natural scenery.
Visit Sea Pines
Sea Pines is one of the most beautiful areas on the island with beaches, biking trails, golf, nature preserves, and Harbour Town all in one area.
Places to eat & drink on Hilton Head Island

Beach views, fish tacos, piña coladas, and family time at the Beach House!
The Salty Dog Cafe
A Hilton Head classic and such a fun stop for families. The waterfront location, live music, and casual atmosphere make it a memorable experience for both kids and adults.
Hudson’s Seafood House On The Docks
One of my favorite places for fresh seafood and sunset views. It has a laid-back coastal feel and is known for locally caught seafood right off the docks.
The Crazy Crab Harbour Town
A great family-friendly seafood spot right in Harbour Town with beautiful marina views and an easygoing atmosphere.
Frosty Frog Cafe
A fun casual stop near Coligny Plaza known for frozen drinks and family-friendly vibes after a beach day.
San Miguel’s Mexican Cafe
One of our favorite casual spots in Shelter Cove for margaritas, Mexican food, and marina views. It has a really fun, laid-back atmosphere that works great for families.
Scott’s Fish Market Restaurant & Bar
A great waterfront seafood restaurant in Shelter Cove with beautiful sunset views and a relaxed coastal feel. Perfect for a nice dinner overlooking the marina.
Red Fish
One of the best spots on the island for a nicer dinner night out. The food and wine selection are excellent, but it still feels welcoming and relaxed rather than overly formal.
Tiki Hut at Beach House Resort Hilton Head
One of my favorite casual beachfront spots on the island. The fish tacos and piña coladas are so good after a beach day, and the live music/oceanfront atmosphere makes it feel like the perfect vacation spot.
Aunt Chiladas Easy Street Cafe
A longtime Hilton Head favorite for casual Mexican food and margaritas. It’s family friendly, relaxed, and always a fun, easy dinner option after a beach day.
Need to know
Renting bikes is a must and honestly one of the best ways to explore the island. We spend so much time biking to the beach, restaurants, shops, and around the different neighborhoods.
There are several amazing house rentals available, especially for larger or extended families wanting extra space and easy beach access. Many homes are located directly on or very close to the beach.
Our family personally loves staying in Palmetto Dunes. One of our favorite little traditions is biking to the Palmetto Dunes General Store every morning for breakfast and coffee before heading to the beach.
Many visitors either drive to Hilton Head, fly into Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport and rent a car for the easy drive over, or fly directly into Hilton Head Island Airport for convenience.
If visiting during summer, restaurant reservations can be very helpful, especially around Harbour Town and Shelter Cove during sunset hours. Weather-wise, Hilton Head is especially popular from late spring through early fall, with warm beach weather and hot summers. Spring and fall are personally some of my favorite times to visit because the temperatures are still beautiful but the crowds are a bit lighter.
