Advisor - Celebrations in the City of Joy: A Kolkata, India Wedding Experience
Curator’s statement

Kolkata is special to me because I experienced it through one of the most meaningful moments of my life, celebrating my friend’s wedding and seeing the city where she grew up. Spending 10 days immersed in Indian wedding traditions revealed the depth, beauty, and intentionality behind the week-long celebrations, from the turmeric and henna ceremonies to the astrology guided nighttime vows and sacred rituals. I fell in love with the culture through its food, festivals, and the warmth of being welcomed into their family. Witnessing daily life and cultural norms firsthand made this journey feel less like a trip and more like an initiation into something deeply ancestral and joyful.

Need to know

Cultural & etiquette tips

  • Dress modestly when visiting temples or religious spaces. Shoulders and knees covered are ideal, and are usually removed.

  • Greeting elders with respect goes a long way. Politeness and patience are deeply valued in Bengali culture.

  • Weddings and festivals are immersive and communal, so expect late nights, loud celebrations, and a beautiful sense of togetherness.

Food & dining advice

  • Kolkata is known for bold flavors and sweets. Try local favorites like Rosogolla, Mishti doi, and Puchka (street food) from clean, busy vendors.

  • If you have dietary restrictions, communicate clearly; many places accommodate vegetarian requests, but spice levels vary.

  • Bottled water is recommended and it's best to avoid ice unless you're dining at reputable hotels or restaurants.

Transportation & getting around

  • Hiring a private driver is one of the easiest and most comfortable ways to navigate the city, especially if you're unfamiliar with traffic patterns.

  • Ride-hailing apps are widely used, but allow extra travel time—traffic is unpredictable and part of the Kolkata experience.

  • Walking short distances can be rewarding, but be mindful of uneven sidewalks and busy streets.

Sightseeing & planning tips

  • Start your days days earlier to avoid crowds and heat, especially when visiting popular landmarks like Victoria Memorial or temples.

  • Many cultural sites close early or have specific visiting hours, so plan accordingly.

  • Even casual outings can feel like an experience. Street vendors, local markets, and neighborhood walks are just as memorable as major attractions.

Shopping & souvenirs

  • Sarees, handcrafted textiles, incense, tea, and traditional jewelry make meaningful souvenirs.

  • Don't be afraid to politely negotiate at local markets, it's expected and part of the culture.

  • Shopping centers and boutiques offer a more relaxed experience if you prefer fixed pricing and air conditioning.

Mindset & travel wisdom

  • Kolkata moves at its own rhythm. Embrace the chaos, colors, and contrasts rather than trying to control the pace.

  • Be open to conversations and invitations—hospitality here is warm and genuine.

  • This is a destination that rewards curiosity, cultural respect, and slowing down to truly observe.
