Swakopmund has always held a special place in my heart. Some of my earliest travel memories are of family weekend getaways and school holidays in Swakopmund, cycling through the misty morning streets to pick up fresh coffee and German pastries from a local bakery that sadly no longer exists—a tradition that's still very much alive thanks to wonderful cafés and bakeries throughout town. While Swakopmund's café culture and charming architecture make it a destination worth slowing down for, the Central Coast is also Namibia's adventure capital. Whether you're skydiving over the Namib Desert, quad biking across towering dunes, riding camels, or discovering the incredible wildlife of the Living Desert, there's no shortage of unforgettable experiences. This guide brings together the places and experiences I've loved for years, helping you experience the best of a destination I've been fortunate enough to return to time and time again.

Dolphin & Seal Cruise (Walvis Bay)
A catamaran cruise across Walvis Bay is my favourite experience at the coast. Watching playful seals and dolphins swim alongside the boat while enjoying fresh oysters and sparkling wine makes for an unforgettable morning on the Atlantic.
Sandwich Harbour 4x4 Tour
If you only do one excursion, make it Sandwich Harbour. The sight of towering dunes meeting the Atlantic Ocean is unlike anywhere else in the world, and the exhilarating dune driving is an adventure in itself.
Living Desert Tour
The Namib Desert may look empty, but it's full of fascinating wildlife hidden beneath the sand. Expert guides reveal geckos, chameleons, snakes, and other incredible creatures while sharing how they've adapted to one of the world's oldest deserts.
Quad biking in the Namib Desert
Few activities capture the spirit of Swakopmund quite like quad biking (ATV) through the dunes. Whether you're a first-time rider or an experienced adventurer, it's an exciting way to experience the vast desert landscape.

Swakopmund is one of the best places in the world to skydive, with breathtaking views of the Namib Desert meeting the Atlantic Ocean. It's an unforgettable bucket-list experience for thrill-seekers.
Explore Swakopmund
One of my favourite ways to spend a day is simply wandering through Swakopmund. Browse boutique shops, enjoy the town's excellent cafés, stroll along the jetty, and admire the charming German colonial architecture.
Visit Walvis Bay Lagoon
The Walvis Bay Lagoon is a paradise for bird lovers and photographers, home to flamingos, pelicans, and countless other bird species. It's especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset, when the calm waters reflect the changing colours of the sky.
Watch the sunset from the dunes
End the day by climbing one of the dunes just outside Swakopmund to watch the sun sink into the Atlantic Ocean. It's a simple yet unforgettable experience that perfectly captures the magic of Namibia's Central Coast.
Places to eat & drink in Namibia
Swakopmund Brauhaus
A Swakopmund institution, Brauhaus is my go-to for hearty German cuisine such as Schnitzel, Eisbein, and generous portions. While you're there, don't leave without ordering the legendary "Stiefel"—a two-liter beer served in a glass shaped like a boot. It's a fun local tradition that's best enjoyed with friends and is all part of the Brauhaus experience.
Altstadt Restaurant
Altstadt combines a relaxed beer garden atmosphere with an extensive menu of seafood, steaks, and German favorites. It's a great choice for a leisurely lunch or dinner after a day of exploring.
Gabrielle's Italian Pizzeria
One of the best casual dining spots in Swakopmund, Gabrielle's serves authentic Italian pizzas with perfectly crisp bases and fresh ingredients. It's consistently one of my favorite places for a relaxed evening meal.
Village Café
If you're looking for breakfast or brunch, Village Café is always one of my first recommendations. Their excellent range of coffees and other hot beverages, freshly baked pastries, and wholesome breakfast menu make it the perfect way to start the day. You can also take on their "Terminator" challenge, which is a giant sandwich served with huge slabs of fresh, homemade bread that can be as thick as five inches!
Café Anton
Located at Hotel Schweizerhaus, Café Anton is famous for its cakes, pastries, and excellent coffee. It's a Swakopmund classic and the perfect place to slow down for a morning coffee or an afternoon treat.
Bar Zonder Naam
Bar Zonder Naam is my favorite spot for evening drinks. Its stylish setting, carefully crafted cocktails, and impressive wine selection make it ideal for a relaxed night out.
Sound Garden
Sound Garden offers a laid-back outdoor atmosphere with live music, craft drinks, and great food. It's a popular gathering place for both locals and visitors, especially on weekends.
Club Salt
If you're looking to continue the evening, Club Salt is Swakopmund's go-to late-night venue. Expect DJs, dancing, and an energetic atmosphere that keeps the party going into the early hours.
Need to know
Rent a car
Namibia is best explored by car, especially a 4x4 or “bakkie” (pickup truck). Having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to visit Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Henties Bay, and the surrounding desert at your own pace.
Pack for every season
Even in the middle of summer, mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cool due to the Atlantic Ocean and the coastal fog. Pack layers, as temperatures can change dramatically between the coast and the desert.
Book popular excursions in advance
Activities such as the Dolphin & Seal Cruise, Sandwich Harbour 4x4 Tour, and Living Desert Tour are among the region's most popular experiences and often sell out during peak holiday periods. Booking ahead is especially important if you're visiting during Namibian or South African school holidays.
Slow down
Don't rush through Swakopmund. Some of my favourite memories are simply enjoying great coffee, fresh pastries, and long breakfasts at the town's many cafés before heading off on an adventure. Swakopmund has a wonderfully relaxed pace of life. Leave room in your itinerary to wander, discover hidden cafés, browse local shops, and simply enjoy the unique atmosphere that makes Namibia's Central Coast so special.
Keep an eye on the fog
The coastal fog is part of what makes this region so unique. While it creates beautiful, moody mornings, it can also reduce visibility on the roads, so allow extra time if you're driving early in the day.
Stay for a “sundowner”
Whether you're on the beach, overlooking the dunes, or enjoying a “sundowner” drink by the ocean, don't miss sunset. Watching the Namib Desert meet the Atlantic Ocean as the sky turns shades of orange and pink is one of Namibia’s most memorable experiences.
