Things to do in Newport, RI

  • The Breakers: The most famous of the Gilded Age Mansions, this Renaissance Revival estate was the Vanderbilt’s summer home along the Newport coast. The building hosts an impressive array of classical art and architecture, set among impeccable grounds overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. You may also recognize this house as one of the filming locations from The Gilded Age in the first season finale (Glady’s Coming Out ball).

  • Marble House: This Beaux Arts-style mansion, also a former Vanderbilt home, was completed in 1892 and stands impressively against the Atlantic Ocean and Newport cliffs. With a facade that stands in comparison to the White House, this opulent estate features impressive interiors with Italian marble and both Gothic Revival and French Neo-Classical interiors. The house has also been featured in several movies, including The Great Gatsby, Amistad, and 27 Dresses.

  • Rough Point: This English Manor-style Gilded Age mansion, originally designed for Frederick William Vanderbilt, and last owned by Doris Duke, impressively sits near the southern tip of Newport. With landscape and gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted’s firm, the house is as impressive and well known for its architecture and interiors as well as its sprawling and impeccable outdoor spaces

  • Rosecliff: Originally built for Theresa Fair Oelrichs, an heiress who made her fortune in Silver, this McKim, Mead, and white-designed structure takes cues from French imperial architecture, mimicking Versailles’ Grand Triannon, and also sits impressively facing the Atlantic Ocean. The estate has also been featured in The Great Gatsby, as well as High Society and True Lies.

  • Cliff Walk: This scenic pathway, which divides the impressive mansions from the ocean, allows visitors to stroll along the ocean and rocky cliffs that line the Newport coast, allowing passerby to gaze at the many oceanfront mansions and estates from afar.

  • Bowen’s Wharf and Newport Harbor: Take in the many shops and restaurants along this historic pier overlooking the harbor, or simply gaze upon the many boats and yachts sailing along the water

  • International Tennis Hall of Fame: Commemorating Newport as the home of the first US Open championship in 1881, this museum features exhibits on tennis history, memorabilia, and competitions across the world. It’s a great spot for both tennis and history fans.
