Curator’s statement
Northern Finland in winter feels like stepping into a storybook—snow swirling through pine forests, reindeer bells echoing in the stillness, and the northern lights dancing across the sky. I first made this journey with my two sons, chasing the magic of Santa’s Village and discovering how peaceful and restorative the Arctic can be. But you don’t need to have kids to feel the wonder here—Lapland’s beauty speaks to anyone who loves quiet adventure and cozy winter moments. This itinerary blends that sense of enchantment with practical travel tips, from night trains to welcoming places to stay, so you can experience the Arctic’s magic entirely at your own pace.

Day 1: Arrive in Helsinki

Helsinki Cathedral rising above the Christmas Market on a crisp winter afternoon.
Arrive in Helsinki, Finland’s stylish seaside capital, and settle in for a restful first night. Spend the afternoon exploring Senate Square, admiring the neoclassical architecture around Helsinki Cathedral, and browsing the cozy cafés and shops nearby. If you’re visiting before Christmas, stop by the Helsinki Christmas Market on the square for local crafts, warm glögi (mulled wine) or hot chocolate, and festive lights that sparkle against the winter sky.

Day 2: Drive to Turku via coastal Finland

Turku Cathedral, Finland’s national shrine, glowing in the low winter light.
Pick up your rental car and set out on the two-hour drive west to Turku, one of Finland’s oldest and most storied cities. Along the way, pause in Lohja to see St. Lawrence Church, a beautiful medieval stone church with centuries-old frescoes, or stop at Café Laurentius for coffee and pastries before continuing through snow-covered forests and frozen lakes.
Once in Turku, visit Turku Cathedral, Finland’s national shrine and a striking landmark along the Aura River. If time allows, stroll the river promenade or step inside the medieval Turku Castle before ending the day with dinner at a cozy riverside bistro.
Overnight: Turku
Day 3: Moomin Winter Wonderland & overnight train

Moomin Winter Wonderland in Naantali—where Finland’s storybook magic comes alive in the snow.
Spend the morning in Naantali visiting Moomin Winter Wonderland, where Finland’s beloved storybook characters come to life amid snow-covered cottages and seaside views. Children can meet the Moomins, try snowshoeing or sledding, and explore the whimsical blue Moominhouse that feels lifted straight from Tove Jansson’s tales.
In the evening, board the overnight VR train to Rovaniemi, the gateway to the Arctic. Load your rental car onto the train’s car carrier before settling into your private sleeper cabin—opt for an en-suite for added comfort on the 12-hour journey north. Enjoy dinner or a warm drink in the restaurant car, then fall asleep to the rhythm of the rails and wake to pale winter light as you cross the Arctic Circle at dawn.
Overnight: VR Night Train to Rovaniemi
Day 4: Santa’s Village & Arctic arrival

Crossing the Arctic Circle at Santa’s Village—a frosty −10 °C (14°F) and pure Christmas magic.
Wake up in Rovaniemi, step out into the stillness of Arctic morning, and enter Lapland. Spend the day in Santa’s Village, where twinkling lights, wooden cabins, and reindeer sleighs bring Christmas to life year-round. Don’t miss the chance to meet the real Santa, have your photo taken in his office, and send postcards stamped with the Arctic Circle seal from his official post office.
For lunch, stop at Lapland Restaurant Kotahovi, a charming log cabin serving reindeer stew, salmon soup, and warm berry juice by the fire. In the evening, return to town for dinner at Niili, one of Rovaniemi’s most beloved restaurants—worth reserving ahead.
Overnight: Rovaniemi
Day 5: Snowman World & Arctic ambience

Sliding through Snowman World’s ice tunnels—part art, part playground, all Arctic wonder.
Spend the day at Snowman World, an exhilarating snowy playground beside Santa’s Village. Race down snow and ice slides, get lost in the snow labyrinth, and take a spin on the outdoor ice-skating rink. When it’s time to warm up, head inside to Café Ensilumi for lunch or step into the Snow Restaurant—a dining space carved entirely from ice and snow that’s rebuilt every winter. Before you leave, stop by the Ice Bar for a drink served in a glass made of ice, then return to Rovaniemi for a relaxing evening in town.
Travel tip: Bring insulated gloves—the ice slides and glasses can get cold to the touch—and reserve a table at the Snow Restaurant in advance, as it books up quickly during peak winter months.
Overnight: Rovaniemi
Day 6: Arktikum & reindeer safari

Gathering around a fire after the reindeer safari—stories, smoke, and steaming cups under the polar night.
Begin the day at Arktikum Museum, Rovaniemi’s striking glass-domed center for Arctic culture, history, and environmental science. The exhibits trace the traditions of Sámi life, the region’s wildlife, and the mesmerizing science behind the northern lights.
In the evening, head into the snowy forest for a reindeer safari, gliding quietly through the trees beneath a pale winter sky. After the ride, gather around a campfire for grilled sausages, warm berry juice, and stories from your guide about life in Lapland.
Travel tip: When your reindeer safari is booked through a reputable local outfitter, they provide thermal clothing, boots, and gloves to keep you comfortable during the ride.
Overnight: Rovaniemi

Spend the day at Nallikari Winter Village, where visitors can enjoy snow tubing, reindeer and husky rides, kick-sledding, and other family-friendly activities. Entry to the village is free, and most attractions can be accessed with a wristband (about €20), which allows unlimited turns on select rides and games. Between adventures, warm up with hot chocolate or a pastry from one of the nearby cafés, then take a peaceful walk along the frozen Gulf of Bothnia before boarding the night train back to Helsinki.

Depending on your plans, spend a little extra time exploring the city’s shops and cafés before continuing to your next destination, perhaps boarding the ferry to Tallinn, Estonia.
Travel tip: If time allows, stop by the Old Market Hall near the harbor for Finnish delicacies and handmade souvenirs before you depart.
End of journey.
Need to know
Getting around
Reserve VR sleeper trains early. En-suite cabins are worth the modest upgrade. Choose a Deluxe Sleeper Cabin for a private shower and toilet. Each cabin officially sleeps two, but a third small child may be added if sharing a berth (arranged by phone with VR customer service). Families can also request adjoining cabins during booking.
If driving, ensure your rental car includes winter tires, and, if available, an engine-block heater. Keep fuel topped off in rural areas.
Tours & gear
Some excursion companies offer discounts for booking multiple activities and provide high-quality cold-weather gear.
If traveling in winter, be sure to have proper cold-weather gear—temperatures in Lapland can dip well below freezing.
Most tour companies provide full winter clothing packages (thermal overalls, boots, gloves, and socks) as part of their excursions and will often let you keep the gear for personal use if you book multiple tours.
Even if you think you’re prepared, their insulated boots and extra wool socks make a noticeable difference in Arctic conditions.
