Things to do in Negril

  1. Seven Mile Beach experience: Spend a day on this iconic stretch of white sand. You can simply relax and soak up the sun, swim in the calm, turquoise waters, or try water sports like parasailing, kayaking, or paddleboarding.

  2. Cliff-jumping and sunset at Rick’s Cafe: Located on Negril’s West End cliffs, this famous spot offers thrill-seekers the chance to leap from various heights into the Caribbean Sea. Even if you don’t jump, it’s a quintessential Negril experience to watch the local divers and enjoy the incredible, uninterrupted sunset, often accompanied by live reggae music.

  3. Explore Negril’s cliffs & grottos: The entire West End coastline features beautiful, rugged cliffs with numerous smaller, less-crowded spots. Take a boat tour or kayak to explore the many hidden sea caves and grottos along the cliffs, which offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling and cave swimming.

  4. Visit a local craft market: Immerse yourself in the local culture by visiting the Negril Craft Marke to browse handmade crafts, wood carvings, and souvenirs.

  5. Blue Hole Mineral Spring: Take a trip inland to this natural wonder, a deep, cool, mineral-rich spring set inside a limestone cavern. It offers a refreshing, therapeutic outdoor experience away from the coast.

  6. YS Falls day trip: YS Falls is a seven-tiered cascade with a rope swing, natural pools, and a zipline, offering a spectacular jungle adventure.

Places to eat & drink in Negril

  1. Best in the West: Located on the beach road, this casual roadside spot is a must-try for authentic, no-frills Jamaican food. It’s widely celebrated for serving some of the best jerk chicken and jerk pork in Negril, cooked in traditional “jerk pan” oil-drum grills.

  2. Ivan’s Bar & Restaurant: Situated at Catcha Falling Star Resort on the West End cliffs, Ivan offers a more upscale and romantic dining experience. Known for its gorgeous ocean views, especially at sunset, the menu features a modern take on Caribbean cuisine, including popular seafood and jerk dishes.

  3. Rockhouse Hotel: Pushcart offers a lively, colorful, and music-filled atmosphere. It specializes in elevated Jamaican street food—from jerk to steamed fish—and boasts an impressive selection of Caribbean rums for cocktails. Rockhouse Restaurant is considered Negril’s premier fine-dining experience, with breathtaking views over the “Pristine Cove.” It specializes in New Caribbean Cuisine—a lighter, modern interpretation of classic island dishes using high-quality, local, and organic ingredients, some grown on the property’s own farm.

  4. Sweet Spice Restaurant: For a taste of where the locals eat away from the main tourist strip, Sweet Spice is a popular inland establishment. It offers hearty, traditional Jamaican home-style cooking like curried goat, stewed chicken, and fresh fish dishes in a relaxed, non-touristy setting.

  5. 3 Dives Restaurant and Cliff Bar: A top-tier spot on the West End for authentic jerk, 3 Dives is known for its legendary, homemade “Granny’s Sauce.” It’s a rustic and friendly cliffside bar that’s perfect for a sunset dinner of jerk or freshly grilled lobster in season.

  6. Erica’s Hideaway Restaurant and Bar: A beloved, authentic Jamaican home-cooking spot known for its warm hospitality and a true farm-to-table approach. Signature dishes include Garlic Butter Lobster, Curry Conch, and Brown Stew Fish.

  7. Miss Lily's: Located at Skylark Negril Beach Resort, Miss Lily's offers a vibrant, colorful, and cool atmosphere. It features a modern approach to classic island cooking, often complemented by a lively DJ and rum cocktails.

Need to know

  • The local currency is the Jamaican Dollar, but US Dollars are widely accepted.

  • The official language is English, but most Jamaicans also converse using ‘Patrois’.

  • Don’t forget to pack your passport, sunblock, sunglasses, and bug repellent—the mosquitos and sand flies are no joke!

  • I recommend making taxi arrangements through your hotel to ensure it is a licensed taxi. You can also use the Uber or Amber OnTime apps to request a taxi service.

  • Driving in Jamaica is challenging and can be unsafe due to aggressive drivers, poor road conditions, and navigation difficulties. They also drive on the left-hand side of the road in Jamaica.
