Curator’s statement
Vietnam’s capital of Hanoi allows visitors to step through centuries of history simply by walking down the street or turning a corner. Ancient temples and serene lakeside parks give way to the French colonial architecture of a former era and the imposing monuments of a more recent past. Shop and eat your way through Hanoi’s Old Quarter or test your nerves on the famous Train Street. Navigate city streets teeming with motorbikes before returning to the quiet comfort of a neoclassical or Art Deco hotel. Located just a few hours’ drive from Hanoi is Halong Bay. Limestone karsts dramatically rise from the bay’s emerald waters, morning mists shroud verdant mountains, and hidden caves reveal their otherworldly beauty—this is truly one of the world’s great natural wonders. Immersing oneself in this remarkable place on an overnight cruise is an unforgettable experience.

Delve into the city’s rich and ancient history by visiting its solemn temples. Centrally located, the Temple of Literature, Tran Quoc Pagoda, and Ngoc Son Temple are a good place to start.
Hanoi’s Old Quarter gives visitors the perfect opportunity to get lost in its maze of lively streets. Explore local shops selling an array of goods or grab a café seat to observe the rhythms of the neighborhood. If you’re feeling brave, you can experience the exhilaration of a locomotive rumbling past on Train Street.
Those interested in more recent history can visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Museum, Ha Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton), and the Vietnam Military History Museum.
Hanoi’s vibrant food scene fuels locals and visitors alike. Tuck into a neighborhood eatery and enjoy favorites like Pho, Bun Cha, or Banh Mi. For a haute cuisine experience, make a reservation at one of Hanoi’s multiple Michelin-starred or recommended restaurants. Finish with a nightcap at one of the city’s trendsetting cocktail or rooftop bars.
Halong Bay cruise options
Sailing Halong Bay in a traditional, Junk-style boat can make you feel like you’ve gone back in time. Vintage décor featuring rich woodwork and vibrant fabrics complement sweeping views from spacious teak decks. The Indochine Premium of Indochina Sails is an excellent option.

Need to know
Halong Bay cruises typically run 2 days/1 night or 3 days/2 nights. It’s possible to get a feel for the area on the shorter cruise, but the longer trip allows for a more relaxed itinerary and more time to enjoy both the surroundings and the boat.
If a Halong Bay cruise is in the middle of a visit to Hanoi, many hotels will hold larger luggage for guests planning to continue their stay after.
Always keep important documents and valuables with you.
