Day 1–2: Milan—Italy’s style capital

Start your trip in Milan, where fashion meets history. Begin at the iconic Duomo di Milano, one of the most breathtaking landmarks in Italy. Head up to the rooftop terraces to see the intricate details up close and take in sweeping views of the city. Just across the way, stop at La Rinascente and make your way to the rooftop café for a coffee or aperitivo overlooking the Duomo—it’s one of the best views in the city.

Spend your second day leaning into Milan’s reputation as a global fashion capital. Wander through the Quadrilatero della Moda, popping into designer flagships and discovering smaller boutiques tucked alongside streets. Plan a long lunch, do some people-watching, and don’t over-schedule—Milan is best enjoyed at a slower, stylish pace. Check out my guide, A Fashion Guide to Italy’s Style Capital, Milan.

Day 3–5: History at every turn in Rome

Arriving in Rome, ease into the city with a gelato and a walk through its lively streets. Make your way to the Trevi Fountain to toss a coin and take in the energy, then continue wandering—Rome is a city best explored without a strict plan.

Dedicate one full day to Vatican City. Visit the Vatican Museums and step inside the Sistine Chapel to see Michelangelo’s masterpiece in person. If you can, attend a Papal audience or Mass—it’s an unforgettable experience. Afterwards, walk to Castel Sant’Angelo for incredible views over the city.

Another day should be dedicated to Ancient Rome. Explore the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill—all located within walking distance of each other. Round out your time with stops at the Pantheon and Spanish Steps, with espresso and gelato breaks in between.

Day 5–7: Canals & charm in Venice

Venice feels like stepping into another world. Spend your time getting intentionally lost wandering through its maze of narrow streets, bridges, and canals. Take a ride on a vaporetto (water bus) or splurge on a gondola ride along the Grand Canal for a classic experience.

Browse local shops for handmade Murano glass—a specialty of the region—and stop in quiet squares for a spritz or coffee. Be sure to visit St. Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace, but leave plenty of time to explore without an agenda—Venice is all about the in-between moments.

Day 7–10: Coastal bliss Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast

End your trip in Sorrento, the perfect base for exploring the Amalfi Coast. Spend a day visiting the nearby towns along the coast, stopping at scenic viewpoints, and soaking in those iconic cliffside views.

One of the highlights is visiting local lemon groves—the region is known for its limoncello, and many farms offer tastings and tours. Back in Sorrento, explore the local shops known for handmade leather goods and sandals, and enjoy long dinners filled with fresh pasta, seafood, and, of course, pizza.

Take time to slow down here—whether that means lounging by the water, enjoying a spritz at sunset, or simply wandering through town. It’s the perfect way to end your Italian itinerary.

Need to know

Italy operates at a slower, more intentional pace—and that’s part of its charm. Even when visiting multiple cities, try not to overpack your itinerary. Aim for one or two planned activities per day, and leave the rest open for wandering, discovering local spots, and truly soaking in the experience. Some of the best moments in Italy happen when you least expect them.
