Advisor - Guide to the Magical Azores
Curator’s statement

The Azores are a dream destination for hikers, nature lovers, plant enthusiasts, and anyone torn between mountains and the sea. This stunning Portuguese archipelago offers dramatic volcanic landscapes, lush forests, crater lakes, and endless ocean views, all packed into a compact and beautiful setting. Despite feeling like a remote paradise, the Azores are surprisingly easy to reach, with direct flights from Boston and New York City, and only a four-hour time difference from the East Coast.

Things to do in the Azores

São Miguel

  • Hike the stunning crater trails of Sete Cidades (São Miguel), where you’ll traverse lush landscapes and be rewarded with breathtaking views of twin blue and green lakes nestled inside volcanic calderas.

  • Swim in the crystal-clear natural ocean pools scattered across the islands. There are several pools on each island. On São Miguel, you can visit Ponta da Ferraria for a mix of thermal water and cold ocean currents.

  • Relax in the thermal pools of Furnas (São Miguel), a geothermal wonderland where you can bathe in naturally heated waters surrounded by lush forests and the scent of sulfur, making it a truly rejuvenating experience.

  • Visit Parque Terra Nostra (São Miguel) to explore the massive botanical gardens and then soak in the natural thermal pools.

  • Sail along São Miguel’s breathtaking coastline, taking in the rugged cliffs, secluded coves, and the occasional glimpse of dolphins or whales as you explore the island’s dramatic shores from the water.

  • Visit the black-sand beach at Ribeira Grande, a hidden gem on São Miguel, perfect for sunbathing or taking a dip in the Atlantic while surrounded by stunning volcanic scenery.

  • Enjoy a guided vineyard tour on Pico Island, where you’ll learn about the island’s unique winemaking history and stroll through vineyards that grow in volcanic soil, offering a taste of the region’s distinct wines.

  • Hike Mount Pico, the tallest mountain in Portugal.

  • Explore the fairytale-like setting of São Jorge Island, known for its steep cliffs, lush forests, and stunning waterfalls, creating an atmosphere of magic and serenity that makes it feel like stepping into another world.

  • Make sure to try Azorean cheese, famous for its rich flavors and unique textures. Whether it’s the creamy São Jorge cheese or the more tangy varieties from Terceira, it’s a must-try delicacy that embodies the island’s pastoral heritage.

Places to eat & drink in the Azores

São Miguel

  • Louvre Michaelense (Ponta Delgada, São Miguel): Wow! This is one of the most flavorful meals I've had in my life! While we were waiting for our food to arrive, we noticed that most patrons were gushing to the staff about how much they loved their food! And they weren't wrong. (Tip: Definitely make reservations. You aren't likely to get a table without one.)

  • Nonna's Teeth and Tomatoes: Excellent pizza.

  • Izekai: Quick, casual spot for sushi and ramen.

  • A Terra (Octant Furans Hotel, São Miguel): Gorgeous restaurant that is reminiscent of a greenhouse, albeit a high-end one, with amazing steak boards, cozida, fresh salads, and great service.

  • Cozido: Try the traditional Cozido in Furnas, São Miguel. Cozido is a traditional dish of mixed vegetables and various meats that are slow-cooked together underground by the heat of volcano vents. It is hearty, plentiful, and much more delicious than I expected it to be. This is available in most restaurants in Furnas.

Pico Island

  • Azores Wine Company Restaurant (Pico Island): Stunning ocean views with tasting menus and Pico wines.

  • Porta6 Wine and Taps (Madalena, Pico Island): Small, casual spot in central Madalena. The owner/server offered very friendly and enthusiastic service. All of the tapas were delicious and served quickly. If you are lucky, you might catch live music here around 9-10 pm.

My main advice for dining in the Azores is: Eat Azorean cheese (especially from São Jorge), drink wines from Pico, and make reservations!

Need to know

The weather in the Azores is pleasant and mild but changes rapidly. The best months are May–September, but you should always bring layers and a rain jacket. Don’t worry too much if the forecast is rainy, it rarely rains all day.

  • June–July is peak hydrangea season in the Azores, and the islands are covered in them.

  • June–August are also the busiest months.

SATA Airlines has a great stop-over program from Boston and NYC if you want to travel onwards to mainland Portugal.

I recommend spending at least five nights in the Azores, but you could easily spend two weeks if you want to visit several of the islands.
