Curator’s statement
Puerto Rico really does have it all! From relaxing at the beach, to hiking in a rainforest, to kayaking in a bioluminescent bay, Puerto Rico is the trip of a lifetime. On top of all that, you don’t even have to leave the country to go! San Juan is a great city with lots of cool history to take in and restaurants to try. From there, experience beautiful beaches around the island. If you’re feeling adventurous, book a zip-line tour, hike El Yunque, or go to Vieques for the bioluminescent bay!

Things to do in Puerto Rico

El Yunque Mt. Britton Trail. Photo by Beni DiVasta
El Yunque
America’s only rainforest is in Puerto Rico, just an hour’s drive outside of San Juan. There are so many unique hikes and waterfalls here to enjoy. I recommend starting at the very top, hiking to the Mt. Britton Observation tower, and working your way back down the mountain from there, stopping along the way.
Toro Verde Adventure Park
For adventurous spirits, Toro Verde Adventure park has zip-lining tours including “The Monster,” which is the longest zip line in America.
Castillo San Felipe del Morro
Located in Old San Juan, Del Morro is a 16th-century Spanish fort. Come to walk around and learn about the history of the fort and Puerto Rico in general. If you go on a Saturday morning, there is a makers' market right out front of the castle as well.
C. de la Fortaleza
If you’ve looked at photos of Old San Juan, you’ve definitely seen a picture of this street! It’s a colorful and vibrant street in the heart of Old San Juan with shops, food, and more.
Condado Beach
This is a great beach to visit in downtown San Juan. It’s easy to walk to with lots of access points so you can set up for a nice beach day near your hotel.
Black Sand Beach (Playa Negra)
If you make it to the island of Vieques, go to the black sand beach to experience the stunning black sand and views.
Bahia Bioluminiscente
Also on the island of Vieques, you can take a kayak tour of the bioluminescent bay at night. I recommend taking a tour with clear-bottom kayaks to fully experience this unique phenomenon.
Places to eat & drink in Puerto Rico

Miramar Food Truck Park
A unique food truck park in downtown San Juan. Lots of string lights give it a great ambiance, too. I love this spot with friends because everyone can get something completely different.
Chocobar Cortes Condado
A great spot for breakfast or a quick snack for anyone with a sweet tooth!
Pinky's Calle Loiza
Breakfast café that is always full! Seating is limited so come early. Smoothies and omelettes are incredible here.
Señor Baguette
All-day breakfast at Señor Baguette cannot be beat! Come hungry for delicious locally sourced food. My favorite was the Señor Bowl.
Di Zucchero
Great spot downtown for personal-sized pizzas.
Lazy Jacks
Dive bar-esque restaurant that’s a must-visit while on Vieques. With great eats and a location across the street from the water, the vibes are immaculate!
Kristy’s on the Caribe
A wonderful beachfront breakfast/brunch restaurant offering their iconic “Fat Ass” pancakes!
Numero Uno Beach Hotel & Restaurant
Buy a day pass for this beachfront resort and get some food and drinks from the restaurant while you relax in their cozy chairs on the beach.
Roofyard
Great rooftop bar and restaurant in San Juan. The downstairs restaurant offers dramatic and moody vibes, while the rooftop is playful and fun.
Need to know
If you plan on spending a few days on Vieques, I recommend taking the ferry as it is $4 each way. The ferry terminal offers parking if you have a rental car. Since there are a limited number of ferries each day, it is recommended to not book your bioluminescent bay tours the same day as your ferry. I would recommend spending two nights on the island.
