Curator’s statement
I wasn’t sure what to expect when we decided to spend a week in St. Kitts—but within a day on the island, I realized that it’s so much more than a cruise stop. It’s a Caribbean experience shaped by complex history, British influence, and extraordinary local culture. The story comes to life at places like Brimstone Hill Fortress, where sweeping views meet powerful reminders of the island’s colonial past. Here, luxury isn’t just beautiful beaches and boutique hotels—it’s access to the real heartbeat of the islands. The star of the show is the food and drink culture: fiery Scotch bonnet heat, slow-simmered goat curry, rum shops with decades of stories, and reggae-filled nights that feel effortless and authentic. My strongest advice is to stay at the Park Hyatt—it’s absolutely gorgeous—but take the opportunity to walk off property down to Cockleshell Bay to mingle with locals at beach shacks and swim in gloriously clear water. The perfect combo of luxury and local!

Things to do in St. Kitts

Brimstone Hill Fortress
Brimstone Hill National Park
A UNESCO-recognized hilltop fortress known as the “Gibraltar of the West Indies,” offering sweeping coastal views alongside powerful insight into the island’s colonial and military history.
Fairview Great House & Botanical Gardens
A beautifully restored historic estate where lush gardens, local history, and rum tastings create an easy window into St. Kitts’ plantation-era past.
Berkeley Memorial (The Circus, Basseterre)
Modeled after London’s Piccadilly Circus, this Victorian clock tower sits at the lively heart of Basseterre and reflects the island’s deep British influence and colonial ties.
Upper Friars Bay Overlook
One of the best panoramic viewpoints on the island, where you can see both the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean shaping St. Kitts’ narrow, dramatic peninsula.
Cockleshell Bay
A relaxed, local-favorite beach with calm water and direct views of Nevis—perfect for long lunches, rum punch, and slow, sun-soaked Caribbean afternoons.
South Friars Bay
Known for laid-back beach bars and swimmable Caribbean water, South Friars Bay captures that effortless St. Kitts rhythm of great food, reggae beats, and zero rush.
Park Hyatt St. Kitts
The island’s anchor luxury stay, offering polished beachfront design, Nevis views, and a refined home base that pairs beautifully with days spent exploring local beach shacks, rum bars, and roadside food culture—true luxury and local balance.
Places to eat & drink in St. Kitts

Goat curry and jerk chicken at Shipwreck
Lion’s Rock Beach Bar & Grill: A relaxed, scenic beach stop known for strong drinks, grilled local seafood, and front-row seats to classic St. Kitts coastline views.
Loxseen Beach Bar: Low-key, local, and full of personality—the kind of spot where the drinks are cold, the music is good, and you instantly feel like a regular. Loxseen herself is lovely and her cold Coronas are only $3 USD!
Reggae Beach Bar & Grill: A lively staple for good reason—reggae beats, rum punch, fresh seafood, and a social, easygoing energy that captures the spirit of the island. My fave there is the chicken roti! Don’t miss Lobster Fest every Friday as the sun sets!
Shipwreck Beach Bar: Iconic and unapologetically fun, Shipwreck blends beach party energy with solid food and drinks, often with monkeys wandering nearby from the surrounding hills. Live Reggae every Sunday! Literally the best place to be on the island Sunday nights. And don’t miss the jerk chicken and goat curry.
Boozies on the Beach: Colorful, casual, and personality-driven—a true toes-in-the-sand rum shack vibe where conversation flows as easily as the cocktails.
Rock Lobster Seafood & Grill: A reliable go-to for fresh catch and classic Caribbean preparations, offering a slightly more polished but still authentically local seafood experience.
Need to know
Direct flights on United from Newark.
Taxis are cash—they take US dollars. Make sure to bring some because the only ATM is at the Marriott casino.
A day trip to Nevis is totally worth it!
Check the cruise ship schedule and stay off the beach when they descend.
