Things to do in Maui

  • Take a snorkeling tour: Snorkeling in Maui is an absolute must. There are several different snorkeling spots around the island, but I do recommend going on a guided snorkel tour. The most popular place to snorkel is Molokini Crater. Jump in the water and swim with the fish and sea turtles!

  • Drive the road to Hana: It takes approximately two hours to get to Hana from Kahului Airport with no stops. The road is definitely windy but so worth it. There are tons of places to stop along the way, such as Paia Town, Ho’okipa Beach Lookout, Aunty Sandy’s Banana Bread, Hana Farms and many waterfalls. Although you can take a day trip to Hana, I highly recommend spending at least one night, if not two or three. This side of the island is a lot more relaxed and low-key, perfect for really relaxing on your trip and escaping the crowds on the other side of the island. If you do decide to do a day trip, you definitely want to start the day very early.

  • Take a sunrise visit to Waiʻānapanapa State Park: This park is located on the eastern side of the island, about 10 minutes from the town of Hana. The park is best visited right when it opens at 7 am so you can watch the sunrise and take the easy hiking trail along the eastern side of the park. Not to mention, relax on the gorgeous black sand beach! Although you can visit later in the day, you will hit a lot more crowds and I feel like sunrise truly is the prettiest time of day as well. This is why I recommend staying the night in Hana and making the sunrise trip!

  • Sunset Cruise in Kaanapali: Maui definitely has some of the best sunsets in the US, if not the world. The sunset is best seen on the west side of the island, particularly in Kaanapali, where you can take a sunset cruise. Sip on some cocktails while looking out at the gorgeous water and sunset. You could even opt for a sunset dinner cruise!

  • Haleakala National Park at sunrise: You will need to wake up very early to drive to the national park, but it is well worth the early wake-up call. Keep in mind that reservations are required. This is a very popular activity, so you want to arrive at least an hour before sunrise to get a good spot to view the sunrise. Although you are in Hawaii, it can be incredibly cold before sunrise due to the altitude, so pack warm clothes!

  • Helicopter tour: Although an expensive activity, this truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Touring Maui by helicopter really gives you that wow factor and gives you a whole new perspective on the beauty of the island.

Places to eat & drink in Maui

  • Hana Farms: This road restaurant, farm and shop is a must-stop in Hana. The fresh wood-fired pizza is phenomenal and you can feel good that you are supporting a local business founded on protecting the land and growing organic,

  • Thai Food by Pranee: Also located in Hana, this little open restaurant is absolutely delicious. It is reasonably priced and has large portions.

  • Braddah Hutt’s BBQ: Another Hana staple is Braddah Hutt’s BBQ. This is a local business run in the front yard of a family, and the BBQ is absolutely amazing. The portions are huge and reasonably priced. I recommend the Kalua Pork.

  • Japengo: Located inside the Hyatt Regency Maui in Kaanapali, this sushi spot is a must-try. It is only open for dinner. I recommend getting a reservation for the 30 minutes before sunset so you can watch the sunset while sipping delicious cocktails and enjoying fresh sushi.

  • Merriman’s: Located in Kapalua, not far from Kaanapali, is Merriman’s, a beautiful oceanfront farm-to-table restaurant. Merriman’s Mai Tai is a must-try and they also have a happy hour menu from 4 pm–5:30 pm daily (subject to change). Happy hour is first-come first served and if you go for dinner, reservations are highly recommended.

  • Mama’s Fish House: The restaurant is an absolute staple on Maui, and for good reason. The restaurant features beautiful ocean views and the most fresh seafood dishes. It is located not too far from the airport and along the route to Hana.

  • Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop: If you are in the mood for the best pie you have ever had, stop by Leoda’s. They are also a great spot for a lunch stop with lots of sandwich, burger and salad options as well.

Need to know

Although Maui is a year-round destination, I highly recommend visiting mid-February to late-March, aka whale season! During this time, you are basically guaranteed to see whales, especially in the Kaanapali Beach area of the island. The weather is also gorgeous this time of year, not as much rain as December and January, and definitely more mild and less humid than the summer months. I recommend staying in a few different areas of the island if you can, and although out of the way, Hana is 100 percent worth a couple nights. A day trip to Hana is doable but it is an incredibly long day, and Hana deserves more than just a day trip in my eyes!
