Alaska has my heart, plain and simple. There’s nothing quite like watching a pod of orcas surface beside the boat, or catching your breath as a glacier-carved valley opens up along a century-old rail line. This is a destination built for travelers who want their trip to feel wild and unscripted, where the scenery and wildlife do most of the talking. I have been five times now, and I always find something new to fall for.

I love spending a few days in Seattle to take in the sights and taste the local cuisine before boarding a cruise. Beyond the fun of exploring the city, a pre-cruise stop here does double duty: Seattle sits two to three hours behind Central and Eastern time, and Alaska is a full hour behind that, so arriving early gives you a real head start on adjusting before you’re at sea. It’s the kind of practical planning that makes the whole trip feel more relaxed from day one.

There’s nowhere in the world quite like New Orleans. The Crescent City hums with a rhythm all its own—a blend of old-world European charm, Creole soul, and the joyful chaos of jazz spilling into the streets. I’ve returned again and again, and each visit reveals something new: a tucked-away courtyard, a neighborhood bar with a brass band that stops you in your tracks, a dish that rewrites what you thought you knew about Southern food. Whether it’s sipping a Sazerac on a quiet afternoon, stumbling into a second-line parade, or watching the sun set over the Mississippi, New Orleans has a way of slowing you down and reminding you how to savor life—life—one one note, one bite, one moment at a time.

I didn’t fully appreciate Guntersville until I left it. Growing up on the shores of Lake Guntersville, I thought the boats, the bald eagles, the Fourth of July fireworks over the water, and the way the whole town comes alive at Christmas were just… ordinary. They’re not. Guntersville is the kind of place that wraps its arms around you—a small, tight-knit Alabama town where the lake isn’t just a backdrop, it’s a way of life. I spent 24 years here, and every time I come back, I’m reminded that this little corner of northeast Alabama has more heart, more natural beauty, and more genuinely good food and people than most places I’ve ever been.

Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge sit side by side, yet offer two unique flavors of Appalachian charm—one with cozy cabins and artisan shops, the other with bold shows, neon lights, and theme park thrills. From moonshine tastings and mountain hikes to pancake houses and alpine coasters, this destination has something for everyone. It’s the kind of place where you can breathe deep, slow down—or speed up—and make memories that last long after the trip ends.

Once nicknamed “The Magic City” for its rapid growth in the early 20th century, Birmingham, Alabama, is a compelling destination where rich history meets a blossoming cultural and culinary scene. From its pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement to its award-winning restaurants and revitalized neighborhoods, Birmingham offers travelers a dynamic weekend escape rooted in story, flavor, and Southern hospitality. Whether you’re wandering through museums, hiking Red Mountain, or sipping craft cocktails in a restored industrial space, this city leaves a lasting impression.

Nashville holds a special place in my heart because of its unique blend of rich history, vibrant music scene and Southern hospitality. Whether it’s the live performances on Broadway, the incredible food scene or the charm of its boutique hotels, every visit feels like an unforgettable experience. The city’s energy is contagious, from the honky-tonks to the hidden gems that showcase its culture and creativity. Nashville isn’t just a destination — it’s a feeling, a rhythm and a place that always calls me back.

Atlanta, Georgia, is a fantastic weekend destination thanks to its mix of history, culture and vibrant city life. Visitors can explore iconic landmarks like the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park and the Georgia Aquarium, one of the largest in the world. Food lovers can enjoy Southern comfort cuisine at renowned spots like The Varsity or experience the diverse dining scene in neighborhoods like Midtown and Ponce City Market. Outdoor enthusiasts can stroll along the BeltLine or visit Piedmont Park for scenic views and relaxation. With world-class attractions, rich history and a lively atmosphere, Atlanta offers something for every traveler.

Chattanooga holds a special place in my heart, as I have been visiting the city since I was a kid. My mom would often take me there for my birthday, and we would stay at the Historic Chattanooga Choo Choo, nestled in the charming, reimagined Pullman Train Cars.

These unique accommodations add a touch of nostalgia and adventure to our trips, making each visit memorable. Exploring the vibrant downtown area, discovering local shops and enjoying the beautiful views along the Tennessee River were highlights of our visit. Those cherished memories of family time in such a picturesque setting have created a lasting bond between me and this wonderful city.
