Curator’s statement

If you live in a big city, its vibrant energy can be exhilarating, but sometimes, all you crave is a complete change of pace. That's exactly what I found in Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This captivating town isn't just another destination; it's a world away from the city's constant hum. Here, slow living isn't just a concept, it's a way of being. The moment you step into Hoi An, a sense of serenity washes over you, inviting you to truly unwind and reconnect with yourself.

For my Hoi An escape, I opted for the luxurious comfort of the Hyatt Regency Da Nang, a mere 30-minute car ride from the heart of the town. Exploring Hoi An was a breeze — pre-arranged day trips through Viator ensured I maximised my time, while the Grab app provided a convenient way to book transport at your convenience from hotel to Hoi An

This 3-full-day itinerary provides the perfect framework for exploring Hoi An and its surrounding wonders, with the option to split your stay between Hoi An and Da Nang, a nearby beach city, catering to different travel preferences.

Day 1: Exploring Hoi An

A view of Thu Bồn River, a scenic waterway in Hoi An, with many small boats and people
  • Morning: Wander Hoi An's Old Town (17th & 18th-century architecture) & iconic Japanese Covered Bridge.

  • Afternoon: Indulge in a custom-made clothing or lantern-making class (quintessential souvenirs).

  • Evening: Explore Thu Bon Riverfront, savor local cuisine with riverside views and witness the magical lantern illumination.

  • Night: Release lanterns on the river for good luck and explore the vibrant night market. (Price: ~350,000 VND for boat tour, negotiable)

This was exactly what we did and do not miss going to one of the rooftop areas overlooking the river. You can also book the lantern-making class in advance, which is available across Hoi An. If possible, avoid the weekends since it's a very small city and can be very crowded.

Day 2: Exploring Hoi An's Surroundings — Day Trip to Hue

Kien Trung Palace with a very elaborate yellow and white facade with many figures and red doors
  • Explore Hue's Imperial Citadel: Immerse yourself in Vietnamese history at the ruins of the Imperial Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Shop at Dong Ba Market: Discover a treasure trove of local crafts, souvenirs and delicious street food at Dong Ba Market, a vibrant hub of Vietnamese culture.

  • Ascend the Tomb of Khai Dinh: Embark on a scenic climb to the Tomb of Khai Dinh (one of the last Vietnamese emperors), a unique blend of European and Asian architectural styles.

We booked a 12-hour private car to take us to Hue for a day trip. You can definitely cover more tourist attractions, however we chose to just visit the top 3 attractions.

Day 3: Hiking and Relaxing in Hoi An

A view of Goc Pho 61 cafe at night with people sitting on the street and lanterns hanging everywhere
  • Morning: Conquer the Marble Mountains — Hike through this natural wonder, explore hidden caves, and marvel at the impressive mountaintop pagoda. (Wear comfortable shoes).

  • Afternoon: Coffee Connoisseur Experience — Unveil the secrets of Vietnamese coffee with a hands-on class, mastering the art of preparing 5 unique coffee varieties.

  • Evening: Savor a Tranquil Moment — Unwind at a charming cafe, indulge in a glass of wine and relish the serene ambiance of Hoi An after dark.

  • Night: Visit Hoi An Night Market and savour the local street foods. Take photos with the famous lanterns of Hoi An.

I absolutely enjoyed the Coffee Making Class. We learned the differences between Vietnamese Coffee, one of the experiences that you can do in Hoi An. On top of that, there are many outdoor cafes with seats where you can just unwind and enjoy the Hoi An breeze while waiting for dinner.

Additional days

A view of the famous Golden Bridge with large stone hand structures and golden railings

If you have extra days, you can also check out these destinations:

  • Beach Bliss: Unwind on Da Nang's pristine beaches, bask in the sunshine and take a refreshing dip in the turquoise waters.

  • My Son Sanctuary: Embark on a morning trip to My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site showcasing the ruins of an ancient Hindu temple complex.

  • Ba Na Hills & Golden Bridge: Ascend the Ba Na Hills for breathtaking panoramic views and experience the iconic Golden Bridge, a must-see architectural marvel.

Need to Know

Other Activities That Are Worth Trying:

  • Vietnamese Cooking Class: Learn the secrets of Vietnamese cuisine by participating in a hands-on cooking class. Prepare local dishes like Cao Lau or white rose dumplings under the guidance of experienced chefs.

  • Bicycle Tour: Explore the charming countryside surrounding Hoi An on a bicycle tour. Ride through rice paddies, traditional villages and admire the beautiful scenery.

  • Coconut Basket Boat Tour: Enjoy the unique excursion in the river of Hoi An, you can also ask the guide to take you on a spin.

  • Spa: Indulge in a relaxing spa treatment and pamper yourself after a day of exploration.

  • Rickshaw tour: Seeing the old town from a one-man rickshaw (a unique thing to do in Hoi An).

There are so many activities you can do in Hoi An and Vietnam. If you are interested and have plans to go to Vietnam for your next trip, I provide customised itinerary planning and booking services.
