I’ve always been more into giving experiences than things, especially during the holidays. Trips, shows, special meals, something we can actually do together as a family. I’m notorious for spending the days before Christmas scavenging the house for things to put under the tree to represent all of the “unwrappable” gifts; pictures of the places we’ll go on February break, a printout of concert tickets in an old CD case, a package of ramen holding a gift card to that new restaurant my husband wanted to try.
One of my favorite memories of this was when my son was little and we planned a late-January trip to Disney World. I wanted the reveal to be part of the magic. So I went all in. I made a countdown calendar so he could check off the days until we left, a destination guide for our resort and park tickets, and a word puzzle that, once solved, said, "I am going to Disney World"—and wrapped it all up and added it to the pile of presents.
Watching the excitement build day by day was almost as good as the trip itself.
That’s when it really clicked for me—when you give experiences, you’re not just giving the thing. You’re giving the anticipation, the build-up, and all the little moments that lead up to it.

If Disney World is on your gifting list (or your future travel list), here are a few low-stress tips that really help:
Go at the right time if you can.
Late January and early February are clutch—smaller crowds, cooler weather, and shorter lines. It makes everything feel way more manageable.Make the reveal fun.
A countdown, a scavenger hunt, a puzzle, even a wrapped pair of Mickey ears—stretching out the surprise makes the whole thing feel extra special, especially for kids.

Look for package deals and built-in perks.
Before booking everything separately, check out Disney vacation packages or promotions. Bundles can sometimes include discounts, free dining offers, or extras like early park entry and transportation—little benefits that add up to less stress and more magic.Make an itinerary, even if you don’t strictly stick to it.
You don’t need to plan every minute, but having an itinerary helps make sure you hit everyone’s must-haves—favorite rides, shows, or snacks. It also helps you take full advantage of early entry or extended evening hours, when lines are shorter and the parks feel extra magical.

Add one or two “special” moments.
A character meal, fireworks night, or a resort you’re genuinely excited to stay at can make the trip feel really memorable without overcomplicating things.
At the end of the day, holiday magic doesn’t have to mean more stuff. Sometimes it’s a little creativity, a printed calendar, or a surprise that turns into a core memory. And honestly? Those are the gifts that stick around the longest.

Need to know
My favorite place to stay: Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. It adds an extra layer of magic to a Disney World trip. With its relaxed island vibe, it feels like a vacation within your vacation—perfect for unwinding after long park days. The location is a huge perk: You can hop on the Monorail or take a boat straight to Magic Kingdom, making early mornings and late nights incredibly easy. I love the tropical vibe in the main lobby, great dining options (yes, including the iconic Dole whip nearby), and the ability to watch Magic Kingdom fireworks right from the resort beach.
