Giraffe Manor: An Encounter You Can Only Live Once
Curator’s statement

Giraffe Manor is defined by a moment that can be captured in a photograph but only truly understood when lived: the rare, intimate experience of sharing space with wild Rothschild’s giraffes who move freely through the manor’s windows and gardens. Set within a refined 1930s estate, this iconic interaction is deeply respectful and profoundly personal. It is unrepeatable, unscripted, and impossible to replicate anywhere else in the world. While the setting delivers classic African luxury, Michelin- and Forbes-recognized service, and thoughtful rituals from spa time to candlelit evenings, it is the feeling of that quiet connection with wildlife that lingers longest. Giraffe Manor is not a place you simply visit—it is an experience that transcends imagery and becomes a lasting memory felt long after the moment has passed.

Relaxing at the Manor House

Visiting Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Kenya is not simply a hotel stay. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime immersion into a world where wildlife, romance, and old-world African elegance collide. The manor is famous for its hands-on, deeply respectful encounters with endangered Rothschild’s giraffes, who freely wander the grounds and appear at breakfast and tea, curiously poking their long necks through the windows.

In one of the manor’s most unforgettable and photographed moments, guests may choose to gently offer giraffe pellets from their lips, creating a playful, intimate encounter that sometimes ends with a soft, surprising giraffe kiss. There is no feeding frenzy or staged interaction—just quiet, magical moments of coexistence that feel intimate, surreal, and profoundly rare. It’s the kind of experience that rewires how you think about luxury travel: less spectacle, more soul.

The property

The manor itself is a beautifully preserved 1930s estate, exuding classic manor-house charm with ivy-clad walls, antique furnishings, roaring fireplaces, and panoramic views of the Ngong Hills. The atmosphere feels cinematic and timeless—think colonial-era refinement without pretension, blended seamlessly with modern comforts. This balance of heritage and excellence has earned Giraffe Manor some of the world’s most prestigious accolades, including three Michelin Keys, The Conde Nast Traveler Guide, and a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star rating, cementing its reputation as one of the most exceptional boutique hotels on the planet.

The experience

Guests are enveloped in a fully curated experience from the moment they arrive. Days can be spent unwinding at The Retreat, the manor’s tranquil wellness sanctuary, enjoying the on-site spa, or lingering over elegant tea service as giraffes graze just beyond arm’s reach.

All meals are included and thoughtfully crafted, showcasing refined flavors with local inspiration, while evenings unfold with fireside games, storytelling, and custom cocktails mixed to your taste. The Manor’s mixologist adds a distinctly local touch by crafting the iconic dawa cocktail (Kenya’s national drink) blending vodka with fresh lime, golden honey, and crushed ice for a refreshingly citrus-forward, lightly sweet cocktail that tastes bright, clean, and effortlessly authentic.

Every detail is designed to slow time and invite presence. Luxury as a feeling, not just a feature list.

In sum

What ultimately makes Giraffe Manor unforgettable is its romance and rarity. There are very few places on Earth where you can wake to the soft presence of wild giraffes, dine in historic elegance, and feel completely removed from the modern world, yet still deeply connected to nature.

It’s a destination best suited for milestone celebrations, honeymoons, or travelers seeking something truly extraordinary. You don’t just visit Giraffe Manor—you carry it with you long after you leave.

Need to know

If you are planning a larger trip in Africa but want to stay at Giraffe Manor, I recommend starting by booking Giraffe Manor and planning the rest of your trip around that. The Manor has very limited capacity in the Manor Houses. Therefore, availability is very limited and books out far in advance.

Additionally, Giraffe Manor is owned by The Safari Collection, which owns other properties in the National Parks, allowing you to easily add a safari experience onto your Manor stay.

Make the most of your time

I recommend planning to arrive early. Giraffe Manor does not have a multi-night minimum stay required, so this is a great way to take advantage of this property if you are only staying for one night. The hotel will send a car to pick you up from your hotel or the airport. Even if you cannot access your room, you will gain access to the grounds and all amenities. Since all meals are included in your stay, you will be able to take advantage of the meals, tea time, snacks provided. You can check into your room and get comfortable with plenty of time to get ready for your giraffe encounter! Extra time on site is great, so you have time to visit the spa and book a service if you’d like. The breakfast giraffe encounter is at 6 am, so plan accordingly!
