The White Lotus Hotel in Thailand: Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui
Curator’s statement

I checked in at Four Seasons Koh Samui genuinely excited, knowing I was about to stay at the hotel where "The White Lotus" was filmed, just before the new season aired. I came with expectations—and the resort surpassed every single one of them. What I found there went far beyond the screen: a sense of place, immersion, and escape that felt deeply real. It’s a hotel that will stay with me for many reasons, some of which I will explore below.

Staying at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui feels less like checking into a luxury hotel and more like stepping into a parallel universe. Hidden within 43 acres of lush tropical hills cascading down to a private bay, this resort is now world-famous as the main setting of season three of The White Lotus. But beyond the screen, what does it really feel like to stay here?

Arrival: A portal to another world

The experience begins at the very top of the hills, where check-in takes place in an open-air Thai pavilion overlooking the entire property. From this vantage point, coconut palms roll down toward the ocean, the private bay glimmers in the distance, and the outside world immediately disappears.

A welcome drink, warm Thai smiles, ocean breeze, and complete silence except for nature. In that exact moment, it becomes clear this stay will be about total disconnection.

My private villa in the hills

A buggy ride through the jungle leads to my Island Ocean Pool Villa, perched high above the resort. The view is breathtaking: an endless horizon, emerald hills, and the private beach far below. The infinity pool feels suspended between sky and sea, larger than expected and perfectly integrated into the landscape.

Designed by Bill Bensley, the villa blends traditional Thai architecture with contemporary luxury. Turquoise and sea-green tones, tropical woods, handcrafted details, and a strong commitment to sustainability define the space. Thoughtful touches, from eco-friendly amenities to a beautifully presented welcome tray inspired by the resort’s restaurants, set the tone for a deeply considered experience.

This is barefoot luxury at its finest: private, serene, and deeply immersive.

Gardens that guide you to the sea

Walking down from the villa toward the beach becomes a sensory journey. The gardens are not simply landscaped. They are curated. Original coconut palms remain standing, complemented by over 1,000 additional trees. Sculptures appear unexpectedly between foliage, bridges connect hidden paths, and shaded benches invite pauses for contemplation.

Bill Bensley’s hand is everywhere, creating a landscape that feels alive, intentional, and cinematic. Villas disappear into the greenery, almost invisible, reinforcing the feeling of complete seclusion.

A private beach like a movie set

The beach is the emotional heart of the resort. Powdery white sand, crystal-clear water, and an atmosphere of absolute calm make it feel untouched and timeless. Pastel aquamarine loungers blend softly into the scenery, preserving the natural beauty of the bay.

Behind the beach sits CoCoRum, the resort’s beach bar, with a long infinity pool facing the sea. Sunset here is unforgettable: golden light, quiet conversations, and cocktails that mark the transition from day to night in the most magical way.

Design & art: Bill Bensley’s signature

This resort is unmistakably Bill Bensley. Traditional Thai elements meet bold patterns, unexpected sculptures, and playful contrasts. Nothing is predictable. Each space tells a story, balancing sophistication with creativity.

The Bensley Outsider Gallery within the resort showcases his personal artwork: a reminder that this is not just a hotel, but a livable gallery where design sparks emotion.

Dining: A destination in itself

Dining at Four Seasons Koh Samui is an experience of its own. Pla Pla, located right on the beach, offers expertly grilled seafood and meats, perfect for long lunches or intimate dinners by the sea.

Breakfast at KOH Thai Kitchen deserves special mention. With panoramic views and an exceptional buffet complemented by unlimited à la carte options, mornings here easily stretch into hours. The French pastry creations by chef Fabien Casalino elevate the experience even further.

One of the most memorable evenings is the Fisherman's Village Night Market, a refined Thai night market recreated directly on the sand, complete with live cooking stations, fire performances, and exceptional seafood.

The Secret Garden Spa

The spa experience begins before the treatment itself. Individual treatment salas are scattered throughout a tropical garden, connected by winding paths scented with fresh herbs. Each step encourages deeper relaxation.

I chose the Detox Ritual, a revitalizing combination of exfoliation and massage using essential oils. The setting, the sounds of nature, and the gentle pace create a sense of total mental and physical release.

Residences & the ultimate privacy

Beyond the villas, the resort features expansive private residences ranging from 660 to over 1,500 square meters. Designed for families or groups, they include multiple bedrooms, entertainment rooms, private gyms, infinity pools, and dedicated butler service.

These residences are where much of The White Lotus was filmed, and it’s easy to see why. They offer complete privacy while maintaining full access to Four Seasons service and amenities.

The White Lotus effect

Following the footsteps of Maui and Taormina, Koh Samui now joins the iconic Four Seasons locations chosen by HBO. Staying here before the season’s release added an extra layer of intrigue: spotting filming locations and imagining scenes unfolding across terraces, villas, and jungle paths.

Watching the series afterward, every corner will feel familiar. The resort’s atmosphere—secluded, luxurious, and slightly surreal—perfectly mirrors the essence of The White Lotus.

Experiences that stay with you

What ultimately defines this stay is not just the setting, but the people. A Muay Thai session at sunset becomes a deeply human experience as the instructor shares how the sport changed his life. A coral exploration reveals the resort’s serious commitment to marine conservation through its Coral Conservation Project.

These moments—personal, unscripted, and genuine—are what elevate the stay beyond luxury.

Need to know

People often ask, “What is the White Lotus hotel like in real life?” And the truth is, once you check in at the Four Seasons Koh Samui, real life feels very far away.

Perhaps it’s the villas, the food, the sunsets, or the private beach. Or perhaps it’s the people—from long-standing team members to passionate chefs and therapists—who create a feeling of warmth and belonging.

Some dreams can’t be fully explained. They can only be lived. And this is one that stays with you long after you leave.
