Curator’s statement
Sydney is a city that blends iconic scenery with meaningful experiences, and my day as a Zookeeper at Taronga Zoo was one of the most unforgettable highlights of my trip. This wasn’t just a zoo visit. It was an immersive, educational, and surprisingly hands-on conservation experience. Being welcomed before opening hours and stepping behind the scenes gave me a completely new appreciation for wildlife care. It reminded me that travel can be both joyful and purposeful at the same time.

Zookeeper Guide with Zookeeper of the Day participants.
Located on the shores of Sydney Harbour, Taronga Zoo offers one of the most unique wildlife encounters in Australia: the Zookeeper for a Day program. Designed for both kids and adults, this small-group experience (maximum six participants) gives guests exclusive access before the zoo opens to the public.

Setting up toys and snacks for the lions.
We arrived early in the morning and were greeted by our zookeeper guide, who had decades of experience working at Taronga. After a brief orientation, waiver signing, and receiving our official zookeeper t-shirts, we set off for a guided walk through the zoo. Before the crowds arrived, we learned about the zoo’s history and its strong conservation mission. Taronga is deeply focused on species preservation and breeding programs, which shifts the narrative many people have about zoos. This is not simply a place to observe animals, but a center for wildlife protection and research.

A giraffe with one of the best skyline views in the world? Only at Taronga Zoo.
The highlight of the experience is that no two days are identical. The schedule depends on animal needs and keeper priorities. During our visit, we assisted with enclosure cleaning and feeding, visited behind-the-scenes food preparation areas for seals and sea lions, observed training sessions, and explored multiple habitats including primates, koalas, and native Australian species. The unpredictability is part of the magic. You truly feel like you are stepping into a working day in animal care.
The program includes a substantial snack break (sweet or savory options), but lunch is on your own. The experience runs until approximately 3 p.m., and guests are welcome to remain in the zoo afterward. We stayed to explore more of the grounds, including kangaroos and other iconic Australian wildlife.

Up close with one of Australia’s most iconic native species — the dingo.
This experience is ideal for families with curious children, wildlife enthusiasts, couples looking for something different, and even solo adult travelers. You do not need to be traveling with kids to appreciate it. In fact, as adults, we found it deeply engaging and educational. For clients seeking meaningful, interactive experiences rather than passive sightseeing, this is an exceptional addition to a Sydney itinerary.
