Curator’s statement
River cruising is one of the most convenient and rewarding ways to explore Europe. Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises sail right into the heart of each city—there’s no need to worry about long transfers or complicated logistics. On a recent spring sailing aboard AmaWaterways’ AmaPrima, I explored four countries in one week, effortlessly blending history, culture, and scenic charm. The Treasures of the Rhine itinerary is perfect for clients looking to experience the best of Europe in a relaxed, all-inclusive setting.

I recommend arriving in Amsterdam at least a day before embarkation to settle in and explore at your own pace. Spring is a beautiful time to visit, and a canal cruise or food walking tour is a great way to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and charming neighborhoods. Once aboard, we set sail for a journey filled with history, scenic beauty, and curated excursions.

The first full day included a visit to Keukenhof Gardens, one of the most spectacular spring attractions in Europe. Blanketed in millions of tulips, the gardens are a dream for photographers and nature lovers alike. As we continued sailing south, we explored several memorable German cities, including Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Rüdesheim, each with its own distinctive character. My personal favorite stop was Heidelberg, home to a fairytale hilltop castle and a delightful Old Town along the Neckar River.

A true highlight of the cruise was the narrated passage through the UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge. This stretch of the river is dotted with castles perched on cliffs, terraced vineyards, and picturesque villages-a scene that feels straight out of a storybook. For active travelers, I highly recommend the Black Forest excursion, which includes hiking through lush woodlands and postcard-worthy countryside.

In France, our stop in Strasbourg offered a wonderful blend of French and German influences. I visited the remarkable cathedral and strolled through La Petite France, a historic district full of half-timbered houses and canals. The cruise ended in Basel, Switzerland, but I suggest extending your journey with a few days in Zurich. You can explore the city’s medieval Old Town, enjoy lake views, and even take a day trip to Liechtenstein for a fun and unexpected addition to your itinerary.

I recommend a Rhine River cruise for my clients looking for a structured, low-stress vacation that blends comfort with culture. It’s an ideal way to experience smaller, lesser-visited destinations without the hassle of constant packing or long travel days. Whether you’re drawn to history, nature, or simply watching the scenery drift by from the sun deck, this itinerary offers something for everyone. Let me know how I can help you plan your European vacation.
