Esalen Institute is one of California’s most iconic wellness destinations. Founded in the 1960s, it’s known for its natural hot springs, wellness workshops, and breathtaking setting along the Pacific Coast Highway. The energy here is calm and intentional. It’s ideal for travelers who crave both reflection and inspiration.

One of two large, expansive gardens on property
I visited during a weekend workshop and found the experience to be both grounding and expansive. Esalen’s accommodations are simple but comfortable. There are shared and private rooms available.

Premium Queen Room. No toiletries provided, only soap. Older room, needs updating... however there are a couple of newer rooms on property.
The food is organic, locally sourced, and served buffet-style. Workshops vary widely... from yoga and meditation to creativity, psychology, and movement. I’d recommend reviewing the schedule and selecting a theme that aligns with your personal goals. There is also a self-guided option where you don’t have to book a specific workshop, but instead can enjoy all the property has to offer on your own schedule. Between sessions, guests can explore the gardens, book massages, or simply enjoy quiet moments overlooking the water.

Dinner with a view
Esalen is best suited for travelers who are seekers at heart. Those looking for a no-frills restorative, introspective experience rather than a luxury resort getaway. It attracts a mix of solo travelers, couples, and small groups who value connection, nature, and personal growth.

Meditation Hut

Art barn. When creative workshops aren't being held here, guests are invited to drop in and create their own art.
Need to know
Cell service is spotty in the area and wi-fi is limited on the property. Expect to fully unplug!
