If you have a layover at Heathrow, don’t waste time in an airport lounge—spend them in London! Start by hopping on the Heathrow Express for a quick, easy ride into the city. Trains depart every 15 minutes and whisk you to Paddington Station in just 15 minutes. Book in advance online to save a few pounds (and skip the ticket line). Luggage storage is available at the airport for a fee if you need to lighten the load for your walk.

Proper English Breakfast at Sheila's Cafe
Arriving early? Kick off your mini London adventure with breakfast at Sheila’s Café (24a Craven Terrace), a small but mighty spot serving up a proper English fry-up. It’s hot, cramped, and absolutely worth it. For something lighter, head across the street to Les Filles Café for a health-conscious start with outdoor seating. Prefer a grab-and-go vibe? Gail’s Bakery or Caffè Nero nearby will have you sorted.

Paddington Basin for peace and relaxation
After breakfast, take a scenic stroll along the canals at Little Venice and Paddington Basin—lined with narrowboats, flowers, and peaceful views that feel worlds away from Heathrow. Then head through Hyde Park toward the Serpentine and Italian Gardens, continuing through Green Park for a classic view of Buckingham Palace. Cut across charming St. James’s Park and you’ll be rewarded with postcard-perfect glimpses of Westminster Abbey and Big Ben in the distance.

Kensington Gardens
If time (and thirst) allow, pop into a cozy Victorian pub like The Victoria or The Mitre for a pint. Or grab traditional fish and chips at the Warwick Castle Pub. Looking for something more elegant? The Orangery at Kensington Palace in Kensington Gardens serves tea all day—perfect for travelers who can’t commit to a set afternoon tea time. Still hungry? Finish with a casual bite at Sussex Fish Bar or a nightcap at Lord Wargrave before heading back to Paddington Station for the return train.

This walkable layover plan is ideal for first-timers wanting a quick taste of London—complete with landmarks, local eats, and that signature British charm. Just remember: comfortable shoes, a fully charged phone, and a flexible mindset are the real must-packs.
Need to know
This itinerary is absolutely doable on a 9-hour layover—but make no mistake, it’ll keep you on the move. Flexibility is key. Don’t be afraid to skip a stop or linger longer if a spot steals your heart. For us, it was the peaceful charm of Paddington Basin and the lush beauty of Kensington Gardens. After a hearty breakfast at Sheila’s, we slowed things down and savored our surroundings before wrapping it all up with tea at The Orangery. Give yourself permission to wander—it’s London, after all.
