Berlin: An Amazing Mix of History, Culture & Food
Curator’s statement

I have had the great opportunity to do a lot of traveling. But not many cities can provide the amazing mix of history, culture, and food that Berlin does, and you can still see it in a four- to five-day trip. This allows the trip to be paired with other European cities easily accessible by train like Amsterdam or Brussels, or other areas in Germany.

It’s a great idea to set up some tours in a city like Berlin, because it will really help you enjoy the beauty of so many landmarks while also providing important historic context. Like so many European cities, I recommend starting your trip with a food tour. Not only did we get to enjoy interesting food that we may not have otherwise tried (e.g., spätzle), but we also learned so much about Berlin’s city center (Mitte) and the city’s past.

Brandenburg Gate

It was also on this tour that we learned about Stolpersteine (Stumbling Stones), an art project comprised of small, brass-covered "golden blocks" embedded into the pavement in front of the last freely chosen places of residence of Holocaust victims. It’s a moving and beautiful tribute. We did this tour in addition to a history tour about the Third Reich and Cold War, in which we saw sites like the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, and Checkpoint Charlie.

Examples of Stolpersteine found throughout the city

In addition to offering a great food tour, Berlin also has excellent restaurants at a great price point that use only local ingredients. This allowed us to try new foods like river trout with kohlrabi and white asparagus. There’s also an array of places with delicious international cuisines, like Israeli and Vietnamese.

In addition to all the history and food, there are terrific cultural activities. Of course, there are amazing beer halls and beer gardens, but there’s also a great theater scene. We saw Cirque du Soleil's ALIZÉ while we were there and loved it!

Need to know

If you decide to combine your Berlin trip with Amsterdam, like we did, definitely stop halfway for an evening in Osnabruck, Germany. We ended up being there for the annual Maiwoche festival, one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany.
