Curator’s statement
There are still places in Bali that seem untouched by time. Places where nature remains intact, traditions are deeply rooted, and luxury is understood as a quiet art. In one of these rare settings, I discovered a refuge that redefines exclusivity through silence, space, and intention: Amankila.

Set on the island’s eastern edge, far from the crowds, Amankila is Bali as it once was... and, in some ways, still is.
Eastern Bali: Where the island reveals its soul
In the far east of Bali, where the island slows and reconnects with its origins, lies the region of Karangasem. Here, the sacred Mount Agung watches over fertile land and villages where Balinese traditions are preserved with devotion. Palm groves stretch endlessly, temples remain hushed, and places like Tenganan, home to the rare double ikat weaving technique, feel suspended in another era.
This part of Bali is defined by quiet grandeur. Mountains descend into the Indian Ocean, black-sand beaches emerge at the foot of cliffs, and historic water palaces recall the region’s royal past. It is Bali in its most poetic form: shaped by ancestral rituals, spiritual depth, and a profound sense of place.
It is here, within this landscape of authenticity, that Amankila reveals itself.
A sanctuary hidden on the cliffside
Perched high above the Lombok Strait, Amankila blends into the hillside with remarkable natural ease. As part of the prestigious Aman collection, the resort embodies a philosophy that privileges connection over display. Here, luxury is never announced—it is felt. In the breathing space, in the enveloping silence, in architecture that captures Bali’s natural light and makes it its own.
The arrival sets the tone immediately. The transfer from the airport, included for guests, already feels like an introduction to another Bali: one of rural scenes, traditional homes, rice fields, and palms swaying in the breeze. Upon arrival, two young girls dressed in traditional Balinese attire welcome me with floral offerings. It is not a simple courtesy, but a ritual—the opening act of a deeply sensory experience.
Design & architecture: Beauty in every detail
Amankila’s architecture is a masterclass in Balinese authenticity. Alang-alang thatched roofs, carved wood, polished coconut shell, and mother-of-pearl interiors all dialogue seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, creating a natural continuity between indoor spaces and the lush exterior.
The color palette is exquisitely chosen: warm, neutral tones that evolve with the light, from golden hues at sunrise to coppery reflections at dusk. Elevated walkways connecting the suites wind through frangipani and bougainvillea, enhancing the sensation of floating between sky and sea.
The attention to detail is exceptional. Each time I settle onto a lounger, towels are perfectly arranged, accompanied by a refreshing facial mist, sunscreen, and a delicately scented towel. The team knows my name, anticipates my needs, and delivers service with genuine warmth rather than formality.
Cultural immersion is offered with subtlety and care. Each evening, a small gift awaits on the bed, paired with a Balinese bedtime story: tales of deities like Ganesha or reflections on local philosophies, quietly maintaining the island’s spiritual presence.

Private suites: Absolute intimacy
Amankila’s suites are conceived as sanctuaries of complete privacy. My Ocean Suite feels suspended above the sea, with a private terrace and daybed inviting me to surrender to the ocean breeze and the sound of the waves.
Inside, calm continues uninterrupted. Noble materials, Balinese-inspired furnishings, and generous proportions create an atmosphere that feels more like a private home than a hotel suite. The bathroom is designed for unhurried rituals: a deep terrazzo bathtub encourages long, contemplative baths, while natural light filters in, casting soft shadows across the walls.
Privacy extends even further. Facilities such as the yoga pavilion and the gym are reserved privately for each guest, ensuring a fully personalized experience. Everything is designed so that this sanctuary feels, for a few days, entirely my own.
Bali’s most cinematic pool
Few settings are as iconic as Amankila’s three-tier infinity pool. Cascading down the hillside, its terraces appear to merge seamlessly with the ocean horizon. Parasols silhouette against the sky, while sunlight dances hypnotically across the water’s surface.
From here, I follow pathways descending through lush vegetation to the Beach Club. A 41-meter pool awaits just steps from the black-sand beach, framed by private bales offering shade and seclusion. It is a place that gently dissolves any sense of time, inviting complete surrender to Bali’s unhurried rhythm.
Elevated gastronomy: A journey of flavors
At Amankila, dining becomes an integral part of the experience.
At Arva, the resort’s Italian restaurant, a creative farm-to-table philosophy takes center stage. Local ingredients are transformed into memorable Italian dishes: fresh burrata with Bali-grown heirloom tomatoes, handmade pasta, locally caught mahi-mahi infused with herbs from the resort’s garden, and desserts such as coconut tiramisu or tropical fruit panna cotta. Dining beside the three-tier pool, accompanied by the ocean breeze, feels quietly cinematic.
At The Restaurant, Indonesian cuisine comes into focus. During dinner, I enjoy Pepes Ikan, which is local fish steamed in banana leaf with fragrant spices, alongside Lawar, a traditional Balinese salad of fresh vegetables, grated coconut, and aromatic herbs. Each dish offers a genuine expression of place.
Breakfasts here are equally memorable: freshly pressed juices, tropical fruit, homemade breads, and carefully prepared hot dishes, all bathed in soft morning light.

Experiences rooted in authentic Bali
Beyond rest, Amankila invites guests to explore the soul of the region.
Cultural excursions lead to villages like Tenganan, where ancestral weaving traditions endure, or to the Tirta Gangga Water Palace, a serene reminder of Bali’s royal heritage. On the water, I can kayak or paddleboard from the Beach Club, or join a sunrise snorkeling excursion aboard a traditional jukung boat, followed by breakfast on deck.
For moments of complete intimacy, private beach picnics become unforgettable: elegantly set tables on black sand, accompanied only by the sound of the sea.
The timeless Aman bubble
Amankila is not a hotel to be visited. It is a place to be lived and felt. A sanctuary that embodies the purest form of timeless luxury, where every detail is designed to create complete disconnection.
Here, time seems to pause. Light, silence, architecture, and an almost invisible yet ever-present hospitality envelop me in a serene bubble that exceeds expectations. Like all Aman sanctuaries, Amankila is a tribute to excellence without excess, to a form of luxury that never needs to announce itself.
On Bali’s eastern coast, I am reminded that true luxury lies not in what is shown, but in what is felt.
