An Italian Seaside Escape in the Heart of Universal Orlando
Curator’s statement

Universal’s Loews Portofino Bay Hotel instantly won me over the moment I arrived—it really felt like I’d been whisked away to a cozy Italian seaside village. I loved strolling the cobblestone walkways, lingering by the peaceful harbor, and admiring the colorful buildings, which made each evening feel magical. My days started with fresh espresso and ended with gelato by the water, and I always found myself slowing down to soak it all in. Whether I was savoring a meal at Bice’ Ristorante, enjoying a lazy cocktail at The Thirsty Fish, or grabbing a slice at Sal’s Market Deli, each experience added something special to my stay. The best part? After relaxing in all that Italian-inspired comfort, I could hop on a water taxi and be at Universal Orlando in minutes. Express access made the whole trip seamless. Portofino Bay became my luxurious retreat, but it also felt like home, and I can’t wait to return.

Universal’s Loews Portofino Bay Hotel instantly transported me to the Italian coast the moment I arrived. Walking along the colorful harbor and wandering the cobblestone walkways, I truly felt like I was exploring a charming village in Portofino, Italy.

Pulling up to The Portofino, you think it's Italy.

My favorite moments were spent in the intimate piazza, where the resort almost feels like its own little world, especially at night, when the lights shimmer on the harbor water and the sound of laughter drifts from the waterfront. Each night, singers entertain by singing beautiful songs in Italian, and if you close your eyes, you feel as though you are in Italy.

So peaceful.

The atmosphere is so romantic and relaxing, it’s easy to forget you’re just steps from the high-energy Universal Orlando theme parks. Whether I strolled to the parks or hopped on a water taxi, I loved how the hotel was both an escape and the center of the action all at once.

Beautiful rooms

Grab a drink at The Thirsty Fish and people watch.

Dining at Portofino Bay was one of the highlights of my stay. Every time I visit, I go to dinner at Bice’ Ristorante, savoring classic Northern Italian dishes in a setting that feels both elegant and welcoming. The Thirsty Fish became my go-to spot for evening cocktails. Sitting by the harbor, sipping a drink, and watching the sunset is the perfect way to end any evening. Whenever I needed something quick, Sal’s Market Deli was my answer—grabbing a slice of pizza or a fresh sandwich, I could still soak up the lively Italian marketplace atmosphere. Each meal added to the feeling that I was truly living “la dolce vita.”

Delicious pizza from Sal's!

No stay at Portofino Bay felt complete without a stop at the harbor’s gelato shop. I found myself returning for scoops of creamy gelato or a quick espresso, taking my treats outside to people-watch or soak in the atmosphere.

I loved wandering into the little gift shops and boutiques tucked around the piazza, finding Italian-inspired trinkets or a souvenir always made me feel like I was bringing a piece of the village home. All these small moments, sweet treats, cozy shops, and the gentle pace of life along the waterfront made my time at Portofino Bay feel truly special, and I can’t wait to go back.

Need to know

One of my favorite things about staying at Portofino Bay was just how easy and enjoyable it was to get around. I loved hopping on the complimentary water taxis—they’re such a fun way to start the day, gliding along the water to Universal CityWalk in under 10 minutes. If you’re in the mood for a stroll, the landscaped walking path is peaceful and lovely—a great way to soak up some sunshine before heading to the parks.

The in-park perks made everything even more exciting! Having Universal Express Unlimited and early park admission meant I could skip the long lines and pack so much more fun into each day. The whole trip felt relaxed and full of happy surprises.

A friendly tip: Be sure to budget for a few extras at Portofino Bay, like the nightly parking fee (whether you self-park or valet). It’s not a big deal, but knowing ahead of time helps!

Whenever I needed a quick bite, Sal’s Market Deli was always my favorite. I loved grabbing a pizza or sandwich to enjoy on my balcony or heading down to the piazza to people-watch. Refueling was always easy and relaxing, so I never felt like I was missing out on any fun.

If you want to treat yourself, I can’t recommend the Club Level rooms enough. The Portofino Club Lounge is such a friendly, relaxing spot for breakfast, snacks, or a quiet evening bite—it’s like having your own little escape during a busy trip. Plus, if you’re a pet parent, you’ll feel right at home. I saw so many happy pups at the resort, and it always made me smile. Next time, I’m definitely bringing my dog along for the adventure.

Some of my happiest memories at Portofino Bay are all about the little moments and delicious food! If you’re planning something special, Bice’ Ristorante is always a treat (I’d suggest booking ahead, it’s popular for a reason). After a fun day at the parks, I loved relaxing at The Thirsty Fish with a drink and appetizers while watching the sunset over the harbor.

My favorite way to end the evening was by grabbing gelato from the harbor shop and strolling past the twinkling lights and charming boutiques. It really felt like a slice of Italy. Those cozy, happy moments are what I cherish the most.
