Salt Lake City: More Than Just a Skier’s Haven
Curator’s statement

Most people go to Salt Lake City, Utah, for world-class skiing at one of six mountain resorts. But, some people may just be looking for a new destination with incredible vistas. Or, you might end up going to ski and experiencing a heat wave like we did. Not to worry: Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas provide plenty to see and do.

Beautiful scenery at Antelope Island, with plenty of bison dotting the landscape.

Antelope Island

There’s plenty of non-ski activities in and around Salt Lake for nature enthusiasts.

My top choice would be a visit to Antelope Island, about a 15-minute drive from Salt Lake City, which is the largest accessible island in the Great Salt Lake. It’s famous for its free-ranging bison herds, and other wildlife like pronghorn and bighorn sheep. There’s lots of hiking trails, including shorter ones like the Lady Finger Point Trail. Check out the Fielding Garr ranch on the island for some interesting Mormon history. Just make sure you pack some bug spray!

The Cottonwood Canyons

The Cottonwood Canyons is another beautiful area with incredible scenic drives and great hiking. The hike to Donut Falls is a relatively short, well-traveled pathway with a beautiful pay-off. The rock formations in every direction are truly breathtaking.

Downtown

In addition to fantastic opportunities to enjoy nature, there’s also amazing art, shops, and restaurants on and around Main Street in Park City.

If you have a beautiful, sunny day like we had, there’s a great patio at Squatters, with yummy salads and sandwiches.

After lunch, walk into the many galleries, including several branches of The Golden Spiral. This has some of the most unique mixed media art I’ve ever seen!

Plenty to see in Park City

There’s even an original Banksy on Main Street, Park City

Need to know

There’s plenty of hotels in and around Salt Lake City. The best area to stay for non-skiers is Downtown Salt Lake. Check out The Grand America Hotel or the Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City.
