Curator’s statement
When we told people we were spending five nights in Lima for my wife's Golden Birthday, the reaction was almost always the same: "Five nights in Lima?" While I never shared the skepticism and was confident Lima could support a standalone vacation, many travelers still see it primarily as a stopover on the way to Machu Picchu, Cusco, or the Amazon. After spending nearly a week exploring the city, I can confidently say Lima deserves far more attention. Between its celebrated culinary scene, dramatic Pacific coastline, walkable neighborhoods, and outstanding hospitality, it became one of the most enjoyable city destinations we've visited in years.

My wife and I recently spent five nights in Lima celebrating her Golden Birthday, using Miraflores as our home base for exploring the city. From the moment we arrived, it became clear that Lima deserved more attention than it typically receives. One of my favorite memories of the trip was our first full day walking from Kennedy Park along the Malecón and through Larcomar. The ocean views were stunning, the parks were full of locals enjoying the outdoors, and the city felt vibrant, well maintained, and genuinely lived in. Rather than feeling like a destination built around tourism, Lima felt like a city people truly enjoy calling home.

Our stay at the Hilton Lima Miraflores elevated the experience even further. We spent five nights in the Presidential Suite, an expansive accommodation featuring a separate living room, dining area, walk-in closet, oversized bathroom, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. While the suite itself was impressive, what stood out most was the level of hospitality. Personalized welcome amenities, birthday surprises for my wife, and consistently attentive service created one of the most memorable hotel experiences we've had. The property's location also made it incredibly easy to explore the city, whether on foot or through inexpensive Uber rides between Miraflores, Barranco, and San Isidro.

Food was one of the primary reasons we chose Lima, and it exceeded our expectations. We participated in a Peruvian cooking class, joined a guided food tour in Barranco, and enjoyed everything from traditional Peruvian cuisine to Nikkei dining, which blends Japanese and Peruvian influences. Some of the standout dishes included lomo saltado, causa, anticuchos, and ceviche. The cooking class was particularly memorable because it provided context behind the ingredients, techniques, and traditions that make Peruvian cuisine so unique. By the end of the trip, I understood why Lima consistently ranks among the world's top culinary destinations.

What surprised me most, however, was how complete Lima felt as a vacation destination. Transportation was affordable and reliable, public spaces were exceptionally well maintained, and each neighborhood offered a distinct personality. Miraflores delivered coastal scenery and walkability, Barranco offered a creative and artistic atmosphere, and San Isidro left us wanting to spend more time exploring. Lima struck a balance between adventure and relaxation that is difficult to find elsewhere. We arrived expecting great food and a memorable birthday celebration. We left with a new appreciation for a city that deserves to be a destination in its own right.

Need to know
Plan for at least four to five nights. Lima has enough depth to justify a standalone vacation, not just an overnight stop before visiting other parts of Peru.
Miraflores is my top recommendation for first-time visitors thanks to its walkability, oceanfront parks, dining scene, and central location.
Uber is inexpensive, reliable, and the easiest way to move between Miraflores, Barranco, and San Isidro. Most rides cost significantly less than comparable trips in major U.S. cities.
Consider including both a cooking class and a food tour. They provide valuable cultural context and help travelers appreciate Peruvian cuisine beyond the country's famous ceviche.
Barranco deserves dedicated time. The neighborhood offers a completely different atmosphere from Miraflores, with colorful murals, local character, and a strong food and arts scene.
Lima offers exceptional value. Dining, transportation, and guided experiences often cost far less than similar experiences in North America while maintaining a high level of quality.
Don't judge the city by the drive from the airport. The neighborhoods most visitors spend time in, particularly Miraflores, Barranco, and San Isidro, feel dramatically different and are where Lima truly shines.
