Dollywood has long been a destination of choice for my family. What’s not to love? Just hop in the car and go. The mountainous Pigeon Forge area is within a day's drive for roughly 66 percent of the US population that resides east of the Mississippi (according to the Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism), which makes the Smoky Mountains a popular destination for many. However, a quick scroll on just about anyone’s social media account would reveal a different story. Everyone knows a family who has recently posed on Main Street, USA, just in front of Cinderella’s Castle at Disney World near Orlando, Florida. Both Disney and Dollywood have won numerous theme park awards. So, which one is better for your next family trip?

Well, that depends. After personally visiting both of these parks in the last several months, I can tell you that there are several factors to consider when considering these destinations. Just like us, each one has its own personality.

Disney World

Let’s start with Disney World. Even though it consists of four parks, I will focus on Magic Kingdom since it is well known for its family friendliness. Is it magical? Absolutely. Is it breathtaking? No doubt. Are there unique experiences here that you can’t get anywhere else? For sure. (They literally put a hologram ghost in your car in Haunted Mansion.) Disney has the most efficient ride loading and unloading process I have ever seen. The crowds they get make this a necessity.

Here are some things to consider when planning a trip here. One does not just go to Disney. There is a lot of planning that goes into a visit. You could just go, but in doing so you would most likely not get to ride what you want, eat where you want, or have the experiences you want. Does your child want to meet a princess? Plan it ahead of time. Do you want to eat at The Skipper Canteen? Better book that in advance. Do you want to ride Space Mountain? You’d better reserve your Lightning Lanes! The planning that’s necessary to have an enjoyable day can feel overwhelming. For many families east of the Mississippi River, a long drive or flight may be required to get there. However, if you are a person with a type A personality, you may really enjoy planning something like this for your family.

Dollywood

Now let’s talk about Dollywood. It consists of one park. Nestled along the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, it remained a well-hidden secret for many years before coming into the limelight. Think Southern hospitality meets thrilling rides meets breathtaking scenery. Is it magical? Probably not. Is it friendly? Absolutely. People move a little slower there, and it definitely attracts a different crowd. You can “just get in the car and go.” No preplanning necessary. Like Disney, meal plans and fast line passes (Timesavers) can be ordered ahead of time, but for Dolly’s park, they aren’t really necessary. If you are a person with a type B personality, you may enjoy Dollywood more than Disney, just for the laid-back experience with no prep work required.

Disney World vs. Dollywood

So, which one is right for your family? If you like to plan ahead, choose Disney. If you like to wing it, choose Dolly. Is money tight? Definitely choose Dolly, as your money will go much further there. Looking for once-in-a-lifetime magical experiences? Choose Disney.

The great news is that you can’t go wrong with either one. Based on your preferences in planning and travel, you might appreciate one over the other. If you want to know more, reach out to a travel agent near you who can help you make the right choice for your budget and your family. The choice is yours, my friends!

Need to know

Both parks include resorts where you can stay and receive special park perks. However, staying off property can be a more budget-friendly approach.
