Advisor - New York: The City from an Outsider
Curator’s statement

New York City is a wonderful place to visit! There are so many things to do in New York that I cannot do them all justice. That said, here are a few of the things that I love to visit when I get the time. The city is massive, so planning ahead can help maximize what you want to see. Multiple trips may be needed to see all the sights.

Things to do in New York City

Macy's wooden escalator

Central Park: Central Park is not the park you think of if you are from the rest of America. This park is so much more and deserves at least half a day to explore it. One of my favorite things to do is just stroll through, listening to all the different people that are taking it in from other places—you will hear at least three different languages. There is so much to see that you will definitely miss something. Take your time and take it in.

The Museum of Metropolitan Art: Although you do have to pay to get into the Museum of Metropolitan Art, it is well worth the price of admission. When I went, it had a Monet exhibit that was simply phenomenal. This is a very large museum that will take the better part of the day to see.

The Statue of Liberty: I mean, come on—everyone should see Lady Liberty! The best way is to hop on the Staten Island ferry—it is free and gives a great view of the Statue of Liberty. This also gives you a sense of what people may have seen sailing into New York as immigrants. Another great viewpoint is the pier by the American Merchant Mariners Memorial.

Rockefeller Center: Rockefeller Center is an absolute must if you are in the city around Christmas—the tree and ice skating are beautiful. There are some shops that sell hot cocoa and other warm drinks. It is great to see at any time of the year, but Christmas is special. FAO Schwarz is one of the many famous stores nearby.

The Original Macy’s: I am not a big shopper, nor do I lean toward any particular department store; however, the original Macy’s does boast the first all-wood escalator. By all means, shop a bit, but you have to see the first escalator. If you are here at Christmas, the window displays are great.

Places to eat & drink in New York City

Burger & Lobster: Do not read into it—get the burger and lobster! I am not sure you can find a better combination at a fairer price. The staff is amazing and the food delicious. Great atmosphere and tasty cocktails.

Dim Sum Palace: I was introduced to dumplings here. What an awesome dumpling house. We ordered a variety of dumplings and didn’t have a bad one. I have yet to find their equal. A must-try if you like dumplings.

Nanking: Asian food at its best. I was referred to Nanking on one of my many business trips and absolutely love it. I eat here every chance I get when I come to town. I have had the lamb vindaloo many times, and it is consistently delicious and spicy. I have also tried the Singapore noodles—they did not disappoint. The garlic naan is wonderful.

Zum Stammtisch: Great German restaurant in the Financial District. The schnitzel is authentic and delicious, and the beer is imported from Germany. It is a feast-like atmosphere with great beer and food.

PJ Clark’s: If you fancy a cocktail, you have to visit PJ Clark’s, one of the oldest bars in New York City. It is everything NYC! It serves up some of the best cocktails I have ever had, and the atmosphere is the best. It has hand foods to eat while you are chatting and having drinks. Absolutely must-visit when in NYC.

Need to know

New York City is one of those American cities that everyone should visit at least once. The city can be expensive, but the experience is second to none. New Yorkers are nice—they are just matter-of-fact in their approach. Engage with them. Be mindful of your surroundings and the city will treat you just fine.
