Need to know
Visit outside peak season
Byron Bay gets very busy in summer and during major events like Bluesfest and Splendour in the Grass. The best times to visit are spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May), when the weather is still warm but the crowds have thinned out.
Skip the car when possible
Parking in town is limited and often expensive. Byron is compact and easy to explore on foot, by bicycle, or with an e-scooter. If you’re staying nearby, you can get almost everywhere without driving.
Try surfing or paddleboarding
If you’ve ever wanted to learn to surf, Byron is one of the best places in Australia to do it. The beaches are beautiful, and the waves at The Pass and Clarkes Beach are ideal for beginners.
Eat local and seasonal
Food in Byron is all about freshness and sustainability. Grab breakfast at Topshop, enjoy a long lunch at The Farm, and check out the Byron Farmers’ Market on Thursday mornings for local produce and snacks.
Watch the sunrise or sunset
Walk up to Cape Byron Lighthouse for a breathtaking sunrise—it’s the most easterly point in mainland Australia. For a quieter moment, bring a picnic to Wategos Beach or The Pass for sunset.
Experience the music and market scene
Byron’s creative energy is everywhere. Catch live music at The Rails or the Beach Hotel, and browse the local art, jewelry, and crafts at the community and beachside markets held throughout the month.
Slow down and enjoy the pace
Byron has a slower, more mindful rhythm than most towns. Take your time, chat with locals, explore the hinterland, and enjoy being present—that’s the real Byron Bay experience.
