Things to do in O‘ahu

Lanikai Pillbox Trail

Water activities

Oahu is the perfect place for water activities. Whether you’re renting a surfboard at a public beach or visiting water attractions like Wai Kai or Wet ‘n’ Wild Hawai’i, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the ocean and sunshine. Surfing is especially popular in Waikiki because the waves are beginner-friendly.

The perfect beach

If you’re staying in Waikiki, Waikiki Beach offers a beautiful walking path along the coastline connecting hotels, restaurants, and shops.

If you want to explore beyond the city, beaches on the North Shore, like Waimea Bay Beach Park are also stunning. Just remember to respect the environment and keep the beaches clean so everyone can continue to enjoy them.

Good hikes

Oahu has hikes for everyone—short walks, challenging climbs, waterfalls, and incredible island viewpoints. Some of my favorite hikes include:

  • Puʻu O Hulu Trail: Also known as the Pink Pillbox hike, with amazing west-side views

  • Lanikai Pillbox Trail: Famous for sunrise views overlooking the Mokulua Islands

  • Koko Crater Railway Trailhead: A steep but rewarding climb with incredible views

Nightlife

Oahu is also known for its music and nightlife scene. Many bars and restaurants host live music and public shows throughout the week. Popular nightlife spots include:

  • The District Nightclub

  • SKY Waikiki

These venues are great places to enjoy music, dance, and experience the island’s nightlife.

Shopping

Oahu is known for its mix of luxury brands and local Hawaiian products. One must-visit shopping destination is Ala Moana Center, the largest open-air shopping mall in the world.

Another great spot is International Market Place, where you’ll find luxury stores, restaurants, and beautiful photo spots that are perfect for capturing memories from your trip.

Places to eat & drink in O‘ahu

Monkeypod mai tai

  • Musubi Cafe Iyasume: This popular local spot is known for its traditional Japanese rice balls and many varieties of musubi. From classic Spam musubi to creative flavors with egg, chicken, or avocado, it’s a quick and delicious snack that’s perfect to grab before heading to the beach.

  • Zippys: A true Hawai’i staple, Zippy’s is one of the go-to places for hearty Hawaiian comfort food. Locals love dishes like chili, plate lunches, and fried chicken. It’s a great place to experience authentic local-style cuisine that has been loved in Hawai’i for decades.

  • MonkeyPod Kitchen: Famous for its mai tais and lively happy hour. The menu features everything from hand-tossed pizzas to fresh seafood and delicious desserts. It’s a fun spot to relax with great food and tropical drinks after a day of exploring.

  • Matsumoto Shave Ice: Located on Oahu’s North Shore, this iconic shop is one of the most famous places for Hawaiian shave ice. With bright syrups, ice cream, sweet condensed milk, and mochi toppings, it’s the perfect refreshing treat after a hot beach day.

  • Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck: Oahu is well-known for its food truck scene, and Giovanni’s is one of the most famous stops on the North Shore. Their garlic shrimp plates are legendary—served hot with rice and packed with flavor. It’s a must-try local favorite when exploring the island.

Need to know

If you plan on adding any of these activities or places to your trip, always be mindful of the culture and respectful of the island and the people around you. Remember that while it’s a beautiful destination for visitors, it is also someone’s home.
