Curator’s statement
When I traveled to Germany, my goal was to avoid massive cities, but still get a historical perspective and that small-town coziness I’d always heard about German towns. In the northern part of Germany, I was able to get both of those things! Hameln is a quaint town filled with storybook sweetness. Hannover is just to the west by train, and while it is a larger city, it provides a deep historical insight into the World Wars and how the city has recovered since. Both offer a slower pace of life and time to recharge.

Things to do in Northern Germany

Colloquially called the Nanas, this art installation is in Hannover
Walking tour in Hannover: Right next to the main train station is a tourist information center where they can provide you with the map of the city. There are many stops to make that expose you to the history and beauty of the area!
Biergartens in Hannover: One of my favorite things about Germany, the Biergartens. A great selection of drinks and food during your day of wandering the city.
Shopping district in Hannover: Not far from the main train station is the shopping district. One of the pulls of this area is its underpass shops. Not something you see everywhere, but they certainly offer everything!
Play in the city square in Hameln: The Pied Piper legend stems from this town, and they put together a play in the square that visitors can go see! It is a lovely way to interact with the community.
City Museum Hameln: Learn about the history of the town, how the legend of the Pied Piper has shaped its growth, and how the buildings have stood the test of time.
Town overlook: Above the town of Hameln is an overlook near a nice restaurant. It provides a lovely view of the town and surrounding areas. It also has a map with other notable locations around that you can visit, such as castles.
