The rugged coastline, towering redwoods, and misty ocean views feel like stepping into a dream, offering a deep sense of calm and inspiration. Strolling through the charming streets of Carmel or hiking along Big Sur’s cliffs always makes me feel grounded and connected to nature. It’s a place where I can truly slow down, reflect, and feel at peace.

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive at San Jose or San Francisco International Airport and drive about 1.5–2 hours to Carmel-by-the-Sea. After checking into your hotel, enjoy a relaxing stroll and sunset at Carmel Beach. End the day with dinner at Dametra Cafe in the heart of town.
Day 2: Shopping & spa

Start the day with a leisurely breakfast or brunch at the hotel before exploring charming boutiques along Ocean Avenue or unwinding at the outdoor spa, Refuge. Spend the afternoon soaking in scenic beauty with a ride along the 17-Mile Drive, stopping for lunch in Monterey. End the day with a stunning sunset and dinner at Roy’s at the Inn at Spanish Bay or another one of the delicious restaurants at the Pebble Beach Resorts.
Day 3: Sip, savor & stroll

Start your day with a hearty breakfast at Katy’s Place, a beloved local spot in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Then head into wine country for a relaxing afternoon of tastings at charming wineries like Joyce Wine Co., Parsonage, Windy Oaks Estate, Folktale Winery, and Georis. Each stop offers a unique vibe and stunning scenery, perfect for sipping and soaking in the Carmel Valley charm. In the evening, enjoy a casual bite at Brophy’s Tavern or opt for a refined coastal meal at Grasing’s in the heart of town.
Day 4: Highway 1 & Big Sur magic

Begin your day with coffee and a pastry at the charming Carmel Bakery before setting off on a scenic drive down Highway 1 to Big Sur. Along the way, stop to explore the natural beauty of Point Lobos, snap photos at the iconic Bixby Bridge, stroll the purple sands of Pfeiffer Beach and take in the dramatic coastal views at Nepenthe. Don’t miss the breathtaking McWay Falls before heading back to Carmel. End your day with a delicious dinner at Mission Ranch or the cozy and romantic La Bicyclette.

Here are a few helpful tips for making the most of your trip to Carmel-by-the-Sea and Big Sur:
Dress in layers: Coastal weather can change quickly. Mornings and evenings can be cool even in summer.
Plan for Big Sur: Cell service is limited, so download maps and directions before your drive. Parking at popular spots like Pfeiffer Beach and McWay Falls can be limited, so arrive early if possible.
Make reservations: Carmel’s popular restaurants fill up fast, especially on weekends. Book ahead when you can.
Pack comfortable shoes for walking through town, exploring nature reserves and light hiking.
Slow down and enjoy the pace: Carmel and Big Sur are made for relaxation and soaking in the views. Give yourself time to wander, explore and unwind.
