Things to do in New York City

The nighttime shows are superior!

  • Watch Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway at the Lyric Theatre, which is just off Times Square. Catch it while Tom Felton is still reprising his role as Draco Malfoy, through November 1, 2026! Be ready for the many photo ops in the lobby area before the show, and stack up on snacks.

  • Visit the Harry Potter store in the Flatiron District—another location that is riddled with photo ops. You can also purchase anything you may need here in preparation for the play.

  • Visit The Drama Book Shop, which is sure to give you all the Diagon Alley feels with its magical displays. Bonus points that it is owned by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with the director and producers for the show.

  • Check out Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them NYC filming locations! While the majority of it was filmed at Warner Bros in the UK, there are also multiple locations that they used in NYC, where the film took place. For example, Central Park Gapstow Bridge, Central Park Zoo, and Times Square. You can also book a (limited) tour of the abandoned Old City Hall Subway Station, which the set for the final battle against the Obscurus was modeled after. Or, you can stay on train 6 during its turnaround to view it from the train.

  • Visit the NYC Public Library. Its grand and magical feel will get you in the mood for the upcoming play.

Places to eat & drink in New York City

The classic bruschetta tastes like home!

There are quite literally thousands of restaurants to choose from in NYC, but there are some food groups that are staples to try when visiting the city.

  • Stop in at Madame George Speakeasy and Cocktail bar for a feel of Professor Trelawney’s classroom. Reservations are recommended

  • Ellen’s Stardust Diner is an NYC classic, whether you like show tunes or not. This immersive restaurant will hopefully have you singing along; if not, then at least you'll be smiling by the time your meal is over.

  • Da Gennaro Restaurant in Little Italy was a delicious choice that we stumbled upon for lunch. There are very few restaurants you can go wrong with in Little Italy though!

  • Bagels are a must-have item when visiting the city. Brooklyn Bagels (with no locations in Brooklyn, surprisingly!) are top-tier!

  • Last but certainly not least: pizza! For me, it’s not NY pizza if it’s not pizza by the slice. Joe’s Pizza will be at the top of everyone’s list and for good reason—it’s consistently good.

Need to know

Do not be afraid to make use of the subway. While walking is sometimes feasible, you will underestimate how long half a mile is until you’re in the middle of it. It is extremely easy to maneuver with Apple Maps under the transit option. The locals are also super helpful if you do ask them if you are on the correct train. It is the most cost-effective means of transportation that the city has. Time to live like a local!
