Curator’s statement
Santorini feels unreal because you’re standing on dramatic volcanic cliffs looking down into a deep-blue caldera, with whitewashed villages spilling over the edge. The sunsets are next-level—soft pink and gold light hits the domes and terraces, making the whole island glow. It’s also one of those places where “just wandering” is the activity: tiny lanes, boutique shops, scenic terraces, and incredible local food and wine with a view. And then you can switch the vibe in minutes, sail the caldera, visit ancient ruins, or hit unique beaches carved from volcanic landscape.

Things to do on Santorini

Caldera catamaran cruise (day or sunset): Sail inside the volcanic caldera, swim in tucked-away coves, and watch the cliffs glow from the water, one of the most “only in Santorini” experiences.
Volcano and hot springs boat trip (Nea Kameni / Palea Kameni): Hike the volcanic terrain, then hop in the mineral-rich warm water near the hot springs.
Sunset in Oia (or alternative viewpoints): Do the classic golden-hour stroll and find a terrace for the famous caldera sunset magical, but go early to beat the crowds.
Hike the caldera rim (Fira to Oia): A scenic out-and-back walk (about 10 km/6 miles) linking cliffside towns with nonstop views, start early for cooler temps and softer light.
Explore Ancient Akrotiri (archaeological site): Step into a remarkably preserved Bronze Age settlement buried by volcanic ash, an unforgettable history stop.
Museum of Prehistoric Thira (Fira): See stunning frescoes and artifacts tied to Akrotiri, perfect for context before/after the ruins.
Santorini wine tasting (Assyrtiko & Vinsanto): Taste the island’s volcanic-vineyard wine, often with caldera views, great for a relaxed, elevated afternoon.
Black-sand beaches (Kamari or Perissa): Unique volcanic sand, beach clubs, and an easy “do nothing” day when you want a break from steps and viewpoints.
Visit a quieter village for local charm (Pyrgos/Megalochori vibe): Swap crowds for slower lanes, traditional architecture, and tavernas ideal for that “local, curated” feel.
Ammoudi Bay for seafood and a swim stop: Head below Oia for waterside dining and a laid-back dip.
Places to eat & drink on Santorini

Tholoto Brunch & Restaurant (Fira): A chic, reliable favorite for brunch or a polished Mediterranean dinner great when you want “easy and impressive” without overthinking it.
Five Senses Restaurant (Imerovigli): Elevated dining with caldera views ideal for a romantic “big night” meal with beautifully plated dishes and a slower, special pace.
Metaxi Mas (Exo Gonia): Beloved local-style taverna vibes (a bit off the caldera path) with standout Greek comfort dishes often praised as a “best meal on the island” kind of place.
Oia Oenosart (Oia): A wine-forward dinner spot with a big list and great pairings, perfect if you want a cozy, curated “wine and plates” night in Oia.
PK Cocktail Bar (Fira): Iconic caldera-view cocktails (especially at sunset) with a date-night feel reserve ahead if you want a prime table.
Need to know
Santorini cruise-day tip: If you’re arriving by cruise ship, strongly consider a ship excursion or pre-arranged tour getting from the tender port up to Fira is the main bottleneck. Cruise ships typically tender to the Old Port below Fira, and the climb is ~587–588 steep steps (hot, slick, and shared with donkeys), so most people take the cable car instead.
The cable car ride is quick, but tickets are bought on-site and it’s usually €10 one-way (you pay each way), and when multiple ships are in, lines can be brutal—go up on an early tender (or wait until later morning) and aim to head back before the big mid-afternoon rush.
