Day 1: Arrival and local fare

I recommend taking the red eye the night before if traveling from the United States. This allows you to jump right into your trip without wasting precious time.
Check into your hotel and get ready for the day!
Head to Museo Poldi Pezzoli. This is a palace dating to the 16th century that has been converted to a museum from the art collection of Count Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli.
Next, hit the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, and take a spin on the seal! Feel free to grab a light lunch from one of the many restaurants. Piazza Mercanti is a short walk away and a great place to wander.
Next, hit the Santa Maria Presso di San Satiro, a 9th century church, San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, and Santa Maria delle Grazie, the site of da Vinci’s Last Supper.
Dinner at Horto Restaurant, offering an innovative dining experience that beautifully blends nature with fine cuisine. Located in the heart of the city, Horto is known for its commitment to sustainability. It sources fresh, locally grown ingredients that highlight the best of Italian produce. The menu, inspired by seasonal flavors, offers a creative take on traditional Italian dishes, presented with a modern twist. It boasts a sleek, contemporary design and a focus on organic ingredients. Horto provides a relaxing yet sophisticated atmosphere, perfect for a memorable dining experience in Milan.
Day 2: Sites and rooftop dining

The Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) tour is an absolute must! This iconic masterpiece of Gothic architecture is a stunning sight from the outside. A tour will allow you to truly appreciate its intricate details, history and breathtaking views. Explore the magnificent interior, with its towering columns and beautiful stained-glass windows. Head up to the rooftop for panoramic views of Milan and the Alps on clear days. The climb (or elevator ride) to the top gives you an up-close look at the cathedral’s spires, statues and intricate carvings. Whether you're a history buff, an architecture lover or simply someone who appreciates beauty, the Milan Cathedral tour is a fascinating and unforgettable experience that brings you closer to the heart of this vibrant city. Make sure to make a reservation ahead of time, as these sell out.
Hit the Royal Palace next and check out the stunning architecture and interiors. Make sure to plan for their special exhibitions!
Next, hit Sant’ Ambrogio, a basilica completed in 1099. The church is beautifully preserved and a must-see if you have historical interests. A short walk away is the Castello Sforzesco, a medieval fort from the 15th century.
For dinner, head to Rooftop Milano, a stunning rooftop restaurant with delicious food and breathtaking views. I recommend grabbing a reservation before sunset.
Day 3: Pool and relaxation

Head to Milano Centrale station to take the train to Rapallo. Alternatively, you can hire a private car. Check into your hotel and relax at the pool.
Walk around town, shop or grab a bite! This is the start of the relaxing rest of your trip, a departure from the high-intensity cultural tours of Milan.
Day 4: Portofino and pesto

I recommend taking a Portofino walking tour, which includes the ferry tickets, walking tours and pesto making class. Liguria is known for their pesto, and this is a great way to immerse yourself in the culture.
Take the rest of the day to wander, visiting the church on the hill, and following the winding, narrow roads.
Day 5: Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre has many options to serve as your home base. I would recommend Monterosso, as it is more centrally located and has the most options for accommodations.
Take the train from Rapallo to Monterosso and check into your hotel!
The best way to travel between villages is to walk or take the train. Feel free to take the day to wander, exploring the small villages, or its beautiful beaches.
Day 6: Boating and sunset

Exploring Cinque Terre by sea
Explore more of the villages or hit the beach!
One of the best ways to explore Cinque Terre is by sea. This is especially true for those with mobility issues and will ensure everyone on the trip can truly experience the magic of Cinque Terre.
I recommend taking the sunset boat tours that include dinner, cocktails and a quick snorkel.
Day 7: Liguria's magic

The Capital of Liguria - Genoa
Time to hit the capital of Liguria before heading back to Milan. Genoa is home to beautiful architecture, cultural institutions and the largest aquarium in Europe.
I would recommend visiting Museo di Palazzo Reale, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the old town. This is an amazing city to purchase Ligurian products to take home, such as pesto and olive oil.
Day 8: Farewell

Head back to Milan for your flight.
Need to know
For the budget-conscious, Milan’s Malapensa Airport offers an express train option directly to Milan’s Centrale train station.
