Advisor - La Paz, Mexico: Baja Beyond Cabo
Curator’s statement

I had visited Cabo several times, mostly for weddings, but it never quite resonated with me. On a recent trip, however, I veered off the familiar path and drove toward La Paz, winding through the sun-soaked desert, past towering cacti and dusty roadside stands. That’s where I found something that truly spoke to me — a coastal town with real soul, where the desert meets the sea, beaches shimmer in shades of turquoise, wildlife thrives, and the food is as vibrant as the landscape. It was everything I didn’t know I was looking for.

Things to do in La Paz

Floating in the calm waters of Playa Balandra

  • Embark on a boat tour to Isla Espíritu Santo, where you'll cruise past some of the bluest waters you've ever seen. Once there, enjoy snorkeling with playful and curious sea lions on this UNESCO-protected island. Many tours also stop at Ensenada Grande, where you can savor delicious ceviche and take a refreshing swim.

  • Dedicate a day to Playa Balandra (a well-known spot with timed entries) to enjoy its serene, shallow and crystal-clear turquoise waters alongside pristine white sand. Just a heads-up: be mindful of stingrays by shuffling your feet while walking in the water! For those looking for a bit of adventure, there's a popular hike that leads to a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the beach.

  • For a more secluded escape, head to Playa El Salto. This tranquil beach offers excellent snorkeling. If you're visiting between April and December, you might even experience the magical bioluminescent phenomenon at night. (Note: You'll need a 4WD vehicle with high ground clearance to navigate the road to this hidden gem!)

  • Stroll along the scenic waterfront promenade in downtown La Paz and explore its charming shops, such as Mezcla BCS.

  • Take a day trip to the artsy town of Todos Santos for fantastic shopping or head to the laid-back surf town of Pescadero (both about an hour away and on the way to Cabo).

Places to eat & drink in La Paz

Jamaica mezcalita at Harker before dinner.

  • Tatanka Baja Fish and Steakhouse: Don’t be fooled by its humble location in the middle of a city block — this place is an absolute gem. The sashimi here is next-level, some of the freshest I’ve had anywhere. We all wished we’d come here earlier in our trip so we could return. Trust me, it’s worth the slightly quirky entry.

  • Biznaga Restaurant: This place has the perfect vibe — casual, lively and great aesthetics. The cocktails are playful, and the fish tacos are a must-try. Whether you’re here for a laid-back lunch or a fun dinner, Biznaga hits the spot with both the atmosphere and the food.

  • Los 32 Sabores: If you're looking to take your taco game up a notch, this place does Mexican cuisine with an elevated twist. The mole here is absolutely delicious, and the flavors are next-level. If you want to go beyond the typical tacos, Los 32 Sabores is where you want to be.

  • Harker Board Co.: Catch the sunset at this rooftop bar on the promenade. Grab a cocktail, settle in and enjoy stunning ocean views as the sky changes colors. Perfect for a pre-dinner drink to soak in the La Paz vibe.

  • Olivia al Mare: If you're craving a break from Mexican food, head over to Olivia al Mare for some classy Italian cuisine. This spot offers a cozy ambiance with delicious dishes that feel like a perfect escape from the usual coastal fare.

  • Paradiso Bakery: The best breakfast spot in town! Perfect for fueling up before a day at the beach. This artsy, digital nomad haven serves up great coffee and pastries — plus, it has that laid-back vibe you need for an easy morning.

  • KatKaw "Cacao Bar y Ceramica": For something a little different, check out this charming cacao bar. Sip on rich, decadent drinking chocolate, or even sign up for one of their ceramics classes. A perfect spot for a sweet treat and a creative experience.

Need to know

Renting a car in La Paz is highly recommended to access the best beaches and take full advantage of nearby day trips. Although La Paz has its own airport, most direct flights typically land in Cabo. From there, you can easily drive to La Paz, with a scenic stop in Todos Santos along the way.
