Advisor - Rainforest to Waves: A Family’s 7-Day Costa Rica Adventure
Curator’s statement

My family had an adventure like no other while we visited Costa Rica, and my kids still talk about how it was their favorite vacation. It’s a place to live Pura Vida and try everything! I cannot wait to go back. By splitting our time between La Fortuna (rainforest/volcano) and Guanacaste (beach), we were able to have many experiences unique to each region.

Things to do in La Fortuna & Guanacaste

Rappelling the falls in La Fortuna!

La Fortuna tours & experiences

  • Zip-lining: You can go for what seems like miles. We did it in La Fortuna through Sky Adventures near the volcano, but they also have it in Guanacaste and other parts of Costa Rica. The guides that lead you are top-notch. I never worried about safety. Take a photo after hopping off the sky tram in the iconic large hand sculpture.

  • Rappelling waterfalls: It felt a bit scary at first, but what a rush to rappel down 200 feet! We did a private tour with Pure Trek Canyoning and had the time of our lives. My small children had no fears.

  • Yoga at Nayara Tented Camp: My daughter and I ended up having a private yoga class because no one else showed up. It was dreamy to hear the exotic birds as we moved through our vinyasa flow.

  • Sloth tour and other exotic animals: A short drive from La Fortuna, we visited Sloth's Territory for an easy, guided walk with two and three-toed sloths living in their natural habitat in the trees. The guides had binoculars to show up close images of the sloths and their babies. They were also great about showing us birds and other animals on the property.

Guanacaste tours & experiences

  • Surfing lessons: The surf in Costa Rica is exceptional for all levels. My kids and I had never surfed and the waves were perfect for learning at Tamarindo Beach. We took private lessons with ATV Tours Conchal.

  • Private boat tour: We did four hours at sea, which was perfect for our family. The captain provided fishing poles and made fresh ceviche from the fish we caught. He also brought a tube for the kids to ride around on, stand-up paddle boards, and snorkeling equipment. Lunch was provided and our captain was excellent.

Breakfast at La Terraza del Arenal

  • Asia Luna: An Asian-inspired menu fused with some Costa Rican flavors, Asia Luna offers amazing sushi and unique dishes. Located in Nayara Gardens, you can’t go wrong with this intimate restaurant, but I suggest making reservations ahead of time—it’s tiny.

  • Ayla: Another fabulous dining option located at Nayara Gardens, we enjoyed a mix of Latin American flavors and Costa Rican dishes.

  • La Terraza del Arenal: Always delicious. We ate the breakfast buffet here every morning that we didn’t choose to have it sent to our room at Nayara. It overlooks the pool and has the most exquisite view of the volcano.

  • Sentido Norte, Las Catalinas: They are known for their sunset views! Check when sunset is, and make sure you get a reservation that starts beforehand. Keep in mind, they do not allow small children. Ages 10 and up are welcome. Reservations required.

  • Ostra: Located in the Four Seasons, Ostra features Southeast Asian cuisine. Don’t miss the beautiful bay views!

Need to know

For a first trip to Costa Rica, I always recommend 3–4 days in La Fortuna (volcano/rainforest) and 3–4 days at the beach in Guanacaste. There is so much to do and see—try to have an open mind and try as many experiences as you can.

You only live once. Pura Vida!

  • Pro tip: Fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) for the arenal part of your trip and out of Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) after the beach portion.
