Things to do in Paris

Drawing class in Museum de Orsay

The Louvre

The Louvre is the world’s largest and most-visited art museum, home to thousands of masterpieces, including the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. Housed in a former royal palace, its grand halls and glass pyramid entrance make it an architectural marvel. Exploring its vast collections feels like traveling through centuries of human creativity and history.

Watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle at Trocadéro

As night falls, the Eiffel Tower comes alive with thousands of sparkling lights, best seen from the Trocadéro Gardens. The wide terraces offer an unbeatable panoramic view, where locals and travelers gather to admire the show. The moment the tower begins to twinkle, Paris truly feels like the “City of Light.”

Walk around Le Marais

Le Marais is one of Paris’ most charming neighborhoods, known for its cobblestone streets, trendy boutiques, and historic mansions. It’s the perfect place to wander aimlessly, discovering hidden courtyards, art galleries, and cafés along the way. The mix of old-world charm and modern style gives it a uniquely Parisian vibe.

Go to Musée d’Orsay

Housed in a beautifully restored Beaux-Arts train station, the Musée d’Orsay showcases the best of 19th-century French art. Its collection includes stunning works by Monet, Van Gogh, Degas, and Renoir. With its grand clock windows and elegant architecture, it offers both artistic inspiration and breathtaking views of Paris.

Take a Seine river cruise

Glide along the Seine River and see Paris’ landmarks—including the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame, and Musée d’Orsay—from a whole new angle. Daytime cruises are scenic, while nighttime ones are magical with the city lights reflecting on the water. It’s one of the most relaxing and romantic ways to experience Paris.

Explore Montmartre

This bohemian hilltop neighborhood was once home to artists like Picasso and Van Gogh. Wander through its winding streets, visit the stunning Sacré-Cœur Basilica, and enjoy panoramic views of the city. Don’t forget to stop at Place du Tertre to watch local artists paint and sell their work.

Visit Sainte-Chapelle

Hidden on the Île de la Cité, Sainte-Chapelle is a Gothic masterpiece famous for its breathtaking stained-glass windows. When sunlight pours through, the chapel glows with brilliant colors—a true hidden gem of Paris. It’s a peaceful and awe-inspiring stop for lovers of art and architecture.

Picnic at Luxembourg Gardens

Relax like a Parisian in the beautiful Luxembourg Gardens, filled with fountains, flowers, and statues. Bring a baguette, cheese, and a bottle of wine for the perfect picnic. It’s a great spot to rest, people-watch, or simply enjoy a sunny afternoon.

Shop & snack at a local market

Visit markets like Marché des Enfants Rouges or Marché Bastille for a taste of everyday Parisian life. You’ll find fresh produce, pastries, cheeses, and local delicacies. It’s a fun way to mingle with locals and sample authentic French flavors.

Need to know

Getting around: Transit App

Download the IDF Mobilitiés app. It’s the official Paris transport app and covers the metro, RER, buses, and trams. It gives real-time updates, route planning, and even allows mobile ticket purchases. It’s especially handy for navigating transfers and avoiding delays.

Neighborhood guide

  • Le Marais (3rd & 4th arrondissements): Trendy, safe, and full of shops, cafés, and history.

  • Saint-Germain-des-Prés (6th): Chic and artistic, with classic cafés and beautiful architecture.

  • Latin Quarter (5th): Vibrant, youthful, and close to major landmarks like the Pantheon.

  • Montmartre (18th): Picturesque and artsy, great during the day—just stay alert around certain northern areas at night.

Avoid or be cautious in parts of the 10th (around Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est) and northern 18th (Barbès, Porte de Clignancourt, Porte de la Chapelle) after dark, as these areas can attract pickpockets and petty crime.

Safety tips

  • Keep valuables out of sight and your bag zipped—pickpockets often target tourists in crowded metro stations and near landmarks.

  • Be wary of street scams or people offering “free” bracelets or souvenirs.

  • Stick to well-lit areas at night and use taxis or ride-shares if traveling late.

  • Carry a photocopy or digital image of your passport instead of the original when sightseeing.

  • Emergency number in France: 112 (for police, fire, or medical help).
