Things to do in La Fortuna & Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Waterfall rappelling in La Fortuna

La Fortuna

  • Hot springs: Imagine spending endless hours soaking in mineral-rich water heated by the Arenal Volcano. This was one of the highlights of my trip. Many resorts have hot springs available to their guests. Other options include purchasing day passes to these resorts or visiting public hot springs enjoyed by the locals.

  • Waterfall rappelling: At first, the thought of cascading waterfalls with ropes and a harness seemed very intimidating. Surprisingly though, it turned out to be an exciting adventure! Yes, you will get soaked, but that enriches the experience. A definite must-try!

  • Whitewater rafting: I’ve been rafting numerous times, but my experience in Costa Rica was exceptional. It was exhilarating to be guided down the river’s rapids while enjoying the gorgeous scenery.

  • Guided nature walk: I became Dora the Explorer for a day! With the help of a personal guide, I went on a nature walk through the rainforest and hanging bridges. My guide was an encyclopedia of knowledge, giving me fun facts as we spotted sloths, monkeys, and spiders along the way. I combined this nature walk with zip-lining, and the aerial views were breathtaking.

  • Coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane tour: Don’t underestimate this cultural experience of touring a plantation and learning about Costa Rica’s agriculture. It was insightful learning about the process for cultivating delicious coffee and chocolate. The best part was viewing the live demonstration of juicing sugar cane using a trapiche (manual hand press) and tasting the spirits made with the juice.

Tamarindo

  • Massage on the beach: In need of some pampering? Add a little luxury to your trip and enjoy a relaxing massage on Tamarindo Beach. Unwind as you listen to the waves crash and inhale the fresh ocean breeze.

  • Sunset catamaran: In Tamarindo, watching the sunset was a mesmerizing activity on its own. But combine that with a catamaran cruise and you have one of the most memorable experiences. Most tours will include supplies for snorkeling, food, and unlimited drinks.

Places to eat & drink in La Fortuna & Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Casado at Cafe & Macadamia

La Fortuna

  • Cafe & Macadamia: This is a scenic open-air restaurant with stunning views. During the drive from Liberia Airport to La Fortuna, I stopped here for lunch. The delicious food was a wonderful introduction to Costa Rican cuisine. I had the casado and a fruit drink. It was so simple but so flavorful. Definitely a must-try if you’re passing by on the way to La Fortuna.

  • Restaurante The Green Spoon: Located in downtown La Fortuna, this restaurant is well known by locals and tourists alike. If you’re looking for a yummy meal without the guilt, you’ve found the place. There are plenty of options for dietary restrictions or people who are health conscious.

  • Various “sodas”: In Costa Rica, there are many of these smaller, family-run eateries. These “hole-in-the-wall” establishments are typically simple, with no fuss or frills. But the food is amazing and reminds you of a home-cooked meal.

  • La Fortuna Taproom: Looking to relax over a glass of craft beer and bar food? Visit the La Fortuna Taproom. It has a casual, laid-back atmosphere that is great for hanging out. And if you don’t know what to drink, just ask your server. They’ll point you in the right direction.

Tamarindo

  • El Mercadito De Tamarindo: This beloved food hall offers various cuisines and options. Whether you’re craving sushi, arepas, or a tasty burger, you can find it here. This is the ideal spot if you're searching for a lively atmosphere, great food, drinks, and music. Don’t leave without trying a cocktail!

  • Pizzeria La Baula: This was one of my favorite bites in Tamarindo. I tried the Baula pizza and it was perfection! The restaurant has a very chill vibe and the staff was extremely kind and friendly. A great stop for a simple night out.

Need to know

  • Costa Rica has both dry and green seasons. If you don’t mind some afternoon showers, the green season (May-November) is ideal due to the green and lush landscape.

  • Renting a car and driving in Costa Rica is not recommended. Some challenges include difficult navigation and poor road conditions. Your travel advisor can arrange private drivers and guided tours. Aside from that, Uber rides are readily available and affordable.

  • Attire: When visiting Costa Rica, pack for comfort and adventure. You don’t need to dress up to enjoy the country. Light, breathable, and practical clothing will keep you comfortable in every setting. Dressing up is optional, but comfort is key

  • Thinking about traveling to Costa Rica? The best part is you can make it exactly what you want. Want a budget-friendly adventure or an ultra luxury escape? It’s all possible. There’s so much room to create the perfect trip that’s perfect for you.

  • While it is helpful to know some common phrases in Spanish, English is widely spoken.
