Day 1: Explore Marrakech museums and gardens

The first day in a new city is all about soaking up the energy and discovering what it has to offer. In Marrakech, you’ll find plenty of beautiful parks and some must-see museums, all within walking distance. This gives you the freedom to create your own adventure — just pick what catches your eye! Whether you want to relax in a garden or learn something new in a museum, you're in for an exciting first day.

Begin your adventure at the enchanting Jardin Majorelle. This lush garden, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent, is famous for its striking blue buildings and exotic plants. Wander through the pathways with your family, letting the children discover the diverse flora and fauna. Take plenty of photos amid the vibrant colors!

After Majorelle, stroll over to Le Jardin Secret, a beautifully restored garden located in the heart of the Medina. Your kids will love exploring the various gardens, fountains and hidden paths. Keep an eye out for the Moroccan architecture and materials on display — it’s a great photo opportunity!

Take a lunch break and savor traditional Moroccan cuisine at Café des Épices, where you can savor traditional Moroccan dishes overlooking the bustling spice market. Fresh fruit juices and local pastries are highly recommended for a refreshing break in your exploration.

There are also many landmarks within the medina if you want to explore on foot.

After lunch, head to the Marrakech Museum, located in a stunning former palace. The museum boasts an impressive collection of Moroccan art and artifacts, and the building itself is a work of art! Engage the kids with an interactive scavenger hunt by giving them a list of items to find within the exhibits.

Explore the Museum of Moroccan Arts. This is just a short distance away is the Maison de la Photographie, a museum dedicated to the photography of Morocco from the 19th century to the present day. It’s perfect for kids who enjoy visual storytelling. Plus, the rooftop terrace has beautiful views of the Atlas Mountains.

In the late afternoon, take a charming horse-drawn carriage ride, called a caleche, to explore the stunning Marrakech Ramparts. These impressive walls extend for 10 km and feature around 200 towers and 20 gates.

Make sure to stop by the beautiful Agdal Gardens or the serene Menara Basins, where you and your kids can enjoy a peaceful stroll. These expansive gardens, filled with fruit trees, create a lovely setting for a relaxing afternoon in nature. This allows the kids to run free while you soak in the beauty around you.

One of the most famous landmarks of Marrakech is Ben Youssef Madrasa. It is a 1300s school that was a cornerstone of Islamic academia and is considered one of the highest levels of Moroccan art and architecture. It's one of those must-see spots if you like to see all the classic sights.

For other options, visit:

  • Jemaa el-Fnaa: The biggest and most famous, vibrant market, bustling with culture and life.

  • Bahia Palace: For all the history – lovers in the group, exquisite Moroccan architecture, lush gardens, historical cultural significance.

  • El Badi Palace: Ruined grandeur, historic site, stunning architecture, Marrakech's heritage.

  • Dar Bellarj: If you love art, this is the place for you! Cultural center, museum, exhibits Moroccan heritage, vibrant arts space.

Day 2: Nature and adventure beyond the city

If you are traveling with kids and they are ready for something a little more "fun" and playful, start your day with an unforgettable hot air balloon ride over the breathtaking scenery surrounding Marrakech. Glide over lush landscapes and enjoy panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains. Post-flight, indulge in a traditional Berber breakfast in a nearby village — a highlight for both parents and kids!

The hot air balloon ride requires an early start to arrive at the launch site before sunrise. If you're feeling too tired, consider returning to your hotel for a short nap to recharge so you can fully enjoy the rest of your day afterward.

For a delightful lunch, head to Le Grand Café de La Poste in Gueliz district. Housed in a beautifully restored colonial post office, this spot perfectly blends historic charm with a vibrant atmosphere. It’s not only one of the most elegant places to eat in Marrakech, but it’s also a favorite of mine for catching up with friends when I am in town. You’ll enjoy a lovely meal in a truly iconic setting. Don't miss it!

After lunch, take a stroll through Gueliz. It offers a modern contrast to the bustling old Medina. The area is a great place to understand modern Morocco. It features wide avenues, contemporary shops, trendy cafes, art galleries and notable landmarks. These include La Plaza, the lively central square with bustling activity, which offers a more relaxed shopping and dining experience. This makes it a refreshing contrast for visitors seeking a different ambiance. Check out Avenue Mohamed V, lined with great shops and cafes, and don’t miss Rue de la Liberté, a street known for its mix of local and international brands. One of my cherished spots is Jeff de Bruges Chocolatier — it was once my dad's bookshop during my childhood, and it holds a special place in my heart!

While you’re there and if you are craving something sweet and want to try a classic Moroccan pastry, stop at Madame Alami, Patisserie Al-Jawda, right next door. Her pastries are the best, and I still stop by whenever I can!

Then head to La Palmeraie for Horseback Riding in the Palm Grove: Kids can ride gentle horses as the family explores palm-lined pathways, learning about the local ecosystem along the way.

Dine at Kasbah Agafay, where you can enjoy a meal under the stars, surrounded by the beauty of the desert landscape. Ideal for those short on time who may not have the

Opportunity for a full-day desert adventure, at Agafay Desert the kids can enjoy camel rides, quad rides and desert exploration.

Day 3: Final day of exploring Marrakech

Chances are by day three, you are a bit tired! Start your day off slowly and enjoy a local cafe. In a city the size of Marrakech, there is plenty to choose from, but here are three I recommend: Café de France, Café Dar Bacha and La Table du Marché Hivernage.

If you have the time and energy, there is still plenty more to see in Marrakech.

Love to go where the locals go? Be sure to visit Bab Mellah, which is the Jewish quarter of Marrakech. It was established in the 16th century and features a mix of local products, ranging from spices, dried fruits and olives to traditional Moroccan handicrafts. It offers plenty of opportunities for photography, especially the colorful markets and traditional architecture. While there, stop at Marché Central Mellah, a local market filled with shops, you can find just about all the fresh produce you need for preparing any meal. There are many varieties of fruit, both local and imported, vegetables, green salad items, olives, herbs and spices. It's the perfect place to immerse yourself in the local culture and experience the flavors of the region.

If you’re growing weary of sight-seeing and would like a break, one option is to go for a day trip to Essaouira. This quaint coastal town, about two-and-a-half hours away, offers beautiful Atlantic views and a relaxed atmosphere. Visitors can explore the UNESCO-listed Medina with its vibrant blue and white buildings and browse local crafts in the lively souks. Enjoy relaxing on the beaches or savoring fresh seafood at local restaurants. Essaouira's picturesque harbor and strong winds also make it a prime spot for windsurfing and kite-surfing. Overall, it's a perfect destination for culture, cuisine and relaxation by the ocean.
