Advisor - Old Wethersfield in October: Scarecrows, Stories & a Little Bit of Witchcraft
Curator’s statement

Old Wethersfield has always been one of my favorite towns in Connecticut, but October is when it feels the most like itself. This is a place where history isn’t abstract—it’s personal, sometimes eerie, and often unexpectedly beautiful. The town leans into fall without turning into a performance, and the result is something layered and meaningful: scarecrows on Main Street, stories of witchcraft and survival, and the feeling that the past is never very far away.

Things to do in Old Wethersfield, Connecticut

Fall in Old Wethersfield means community traditions, local harvests, and slowing down enough to enjoy them

  • Walk Main Street during scarecrow season: One of my favorite October traditions in Old Wethersfield is walking Main Street when the scarecrows go up. Each one has its own personality—whimsical, clever, or just a little strange—and they transform the town into something playful while still feeling grounded in tradition.

  • Follow the literary trail of The Witch of Blackbird Pond: If you ever read The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Old Wethersfield will feel familiar in an almost uncanny way. The landscape, the houses, and the weight of Puritan history bring the story to life. Visiting places like the Buttolph-Williams House helps connect the novel to real lives and real fears that once existed here.

  • Explore the historic properties of the Wethersfield Historical Society: The Keeney Memorial Cultural Center is just one of several buildings maintained by the Historical Society. Walking between their historic homes and exhibition spaces in October feels less like visiting a museum and more like stepping into different chapters of the town’s story.

  • Take a Witches & Tombstones or Ancient Burying Ground Tour: October is when old Wethersfield gently acknowledges its darker history. Guided tours through the Ancient Burying Ground and themed walks, focused on witchcraft, accusations are thoughtful and atmospheric rather than theatrical, adding depths in context to what you see.

  • Spend quiet time in the Ancient Burying Ground: This is not a place to rush. The symbols on the headstones, the names, and the dates all tell stories if you give them time. In October, with cooler and softer light, it’s especially moving.

  • Let yourself wander: Some of the best old Wethersfield moments happen without a plan. Side streets, historic homes, and small details reveal themselves when you slow down and let the town unfold naturally.

Places to eat & drink in Old Wethersfield, Connecticut

October at The Charles feels both festive and refined—a perfect stop after a day spent wandering Old Wethersfield

  • Lucky Lou’s Bar & Grill: This is my number one recommendation in Old Wethersfield. Lucky Lou’s is casual, welcoming, and consistently good. I always suggest the Aussie Fish and Chips—they’re gluten-free and some of the best fish and chips around. It’s the perfect place to land after a day of walking and exploring.

  • Heirloom Market at Comstock Ferre: Comstock Ferre is a place I return to again and again. They serve breakfast and lunch, offer excellent seasonal soups, and my go-to order is the veggie wrap. In the afternoon, the full bar makes it a great stop for a casual cocktail, and they occasionally host evening events. It also happens to have the best coffee in town.

  • The Charles: The Charles is ideal when you want something a bit more elevated while still feeling comfortable. I recommend making a reservation, especially in October, as it fills up quickly during peak fall weekends.

  • Village Pizza: A true neighborhood staple. Village Pizza is familiar, dependable, and exactly what you want when you’re craving something simple and satisfying.

Need to know

October is one of the best times to visit Old Wethersfield, but it’s also when planning ahead matters most. Many events and tours are date-specific, and reservations—especially at The Charles—are worth making in advance. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and I always encourage travelers to leave space in their schedule to linger. Old Wethersfield is at its best when you let it move at its own pace.
