Things to do on Catalina Island

Take a bison tour and explore the back side of the island: Book a specialized tour that takes you deep into the hills and rugged back side of Catalina to spot the famous herd of American bison, originally left on the island after they were used for filming a movie. This tour is the only way to experience the vast, undeveloped interior, offering incredible beauty and sweeping views distinct from the harbor area.
Snorkel or dive at the Casino Point Dive Park: This world-renowned protected underwater park is easily accessible and teeming with colorful Garibaldi fish, rays, and abundant kelp forests. Certified divers often spot octopuses and even friendly sea lions, making it one of the most rewarding aquatic experiences in Southern California.
Spend the day at Descanso Beach Club: Located just past the Casino, this is the island's premier spot for true beachfront relaxation, offering chaise lounges, cabanas, and full food and beverage service right on the sand. It's the perfect place to swim, socialize, and sip the island's famous "Buffalo Milk" cocktail.
Go parasailing for a bird's-eye view: Book a parasailing tour right from the harbor to soar high above Avalon, offering unmatched views of the entire town, the rugged coastline, and the expansive Pacific Ocean. This exhilarating activity provides a completely different perspective of the island’s beauty.
Take a dolphin or ocean wildlife tour: Numerous boat tours depart from Avalon to take visitors into the open ocean, where you have an excellent chance of spotting large pods of playful dolphins, sea lions, and migrating whales. It is a fantastic way to appreciate the diverse marine ecosystem surrounding the island.
Explore Avalon's history and shops on foot: Everything in Avalon is completely walkable; you can spend hours browsing the unique shops on Crescent Avenue, checking out the local art, and learning the history of the island's development. Take a guided tour to fully appreciate the classic architecture, including the famous Art Deco casino.
Rent a golf cart for a scenic hour (or two!): While Avalon is walkable, renting a golf cart for the permitted one- or two-hour limit is a fun way to drive the loop up into the hills. This short drive provides spectacular, sweeping photo opportunities of the harbor, the Casino, and the mainland across the channel.
Places to eat & drink on Catalina Island

The M Restaurant: Located right across the water in Avalon, this restaurant offers stunning harbor views and a refined menu focused on fresh seafood and classic American cuisine. It's a fantastic spot for a leisurely meal where you can soak up the beautiful Mediterranean-like scenery and the great island vibe.
Blue Water Grill: Also situated directly on the water, this restaurant offers some of the freshest seafood on the island with fantastic views of the boats and coastline. Their open-air deck seating is highly coveted, making it an excellent spot for lunch or a sunset dinner.
Avalon Grille: A sophisticated American restaurant located on Crescent Avenue, offering creative cocktails, an impressive wine list, and high-quality seasonal dishes, including steaks and fresh catches. The refined atmosphere makes it a reliable choice for a nicer dinner experience on the island.
Descanso Beach Club Bar: While technically a "thing to do," the bar at Descanso is a destination in itself, known for serving the island's legendary Buffalo Milk cocktail (a creamy, coffee-liqueur based concoction). It's the best place to sip a classic Catalina drink while your feet are in the sand.
Original Antonio's Pizzeria & Deli: A favorite for casual dining, Antonio's is known for its New York-style pizza, generous sandwiches, and fun, slightly chaotic atmosphere. It’s perfect for a satisfying, relaxed meal, especially after a long day of activities.
Harbor Reef Restaurant (Two Harbors): If you venture to the island's quieter, rustic side—Two Harbors—this is the only full-service restaurant, offering great beach views and classic California-style food. It is the essential gathering spot for boaters and adventurers exploring the West End.
Need to know
Walkability is key: Do not worry about transportation! The town of Avalon is incredibly compact, and you can easily walk to all restaurants, shops, and attractions, which is part of the island's charm. Renting a golf cart is fun for the scenic drive, but not necessary for getting around.
Golf cart rules: Golf carts are typically only available to rent by the hour, with a maximum limit of two hours, unless you are renting a private home that specifically includes one. Plan your scenic drive accordingly to maximize your time.
Book ahead: Because the island is small and popular, always book your ferry tickets (Catalina Express), popular activities (like the zip line), and dinner reservations well in advance, especially during the busy summer months.
