Day 1: Ferry to St. John

Views from the Ram's Head Trail

After an early breakfast, make your way to Red Hook to catch the first car ferry to St. John. The short ride offers beautiful views and is the perfect introduction to the island (ferry reservations are recommended). Once you arrive, stop by the Visitor Center to explore the museum, learn about the island's history, and browse the gift shop before beginning your day in the park. Before setting out, grab a sandwich to go from Northshore Deli across the street to have as a picnic later.

Virgin Islands National Park offers an incredible variety of hiking trails, from lush jungle paths leading to historic ruins on the Reef Bay Trail to the dramatic coastal views of the Ram Head Trail. We chose Ram Head for its shorter distance and rewarding panoramic vistas, but be sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection, as there is very little shade along the route.

After your hike, visit the Annaberg Historic District to explore the remains of a former sugar plantation, then walk the scenic Leinster Bay Trail to Waterlemon Cay, one of the island's best snorkeling spots. If you'd rather spend the day by the water, Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay are among the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Just plan to arrive early, as parking fills quickly and spots do not become available often.

Before catching the ferry back to St. Thomas, spend some time in Cruz Bay and enjoy a cold beer at St. John Brewers or an ice cream at St. John Scoops. It's the perfect way to reflect on a day spent exploring one of America's most unique national parks before watching the sun set over the Caribbean on the ferry ride home.

Day 2: Exploring St. Thomas

99 Steps in Charlotte Amalie

After a full day exploring the National Park, we spent a slow morning enjoying some downtime before setting out to discover more of St. Thomas. Our first stop was Fort Christian, a striking red fort dating back to the 1600s and one of the island's most recognizable historic landmarks. From there, we wandered through Emancipation Garden, a peaceful plaza honoring the abolition of slavery in the Danish West Indies, before climbing the famous 99 Steps, a picturesque staircase built from bricks once used as ship ballast during the colonial era.

To experience some of the island's most spectacular scenery, we continued up the mountain to Drake's Seat, where sweeping views stretch across the North Shore, neighboring islands, and the turquoise waters surrounding Magens Bay. After taking in the vistas, we stopped at Moe's Fresh Market in Yacht Haven Grande to pick up made-to-order sandwiches, snacks, and drinks for a beach picnic.

The afternoon was spent at Lindquist Beach, a quieter stretch of white sand and crystal-clear water that quickly became one of our favorite spots on the island. Its clear waters and seagrass beds make it an excellent place for snorkeling, with opportunities to see spotted stingrays and sea turtles gliding through the shallows. To end the day, we headed to Iggy's Beach Bar for a laid-back waterfront dinner, where great food, ocean breezes, and a Caribbean sunset provided the perfect finish to another unforgettable day in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Day 3: Shopping in Charlotte Amalie

Brunch at El Barsito

For our final morning in St. Thomas, we treated ourselves to Sunday brunch at El Barsito, the rooftop restaurant at The Pink Palm Hotel. Perched high above Charlotte Amalie, this colorful boutique hotel offers a stylish yet relaxed atmosphere, with tropical décor, island breezes, and beautiful harbor views. The food was just as memorable, featuring fresh, flavorful dishes that made it easy to linger a little longer and savor our last day on the island.

After brunch, we headed into downtown Charlotte Amalie to explore the Historic District, known for its charming streets, colorful architecture, and excellent shopping. From locally made souvenirs and Caribbean artwork to duty-free jewelry and boutiques, there is no shortage of treasures to discover.

That evening, we wrapped up our trip with dinner at Enkai Sushi Bar. The sushi was incredibly fresh and creative, easily some of the best we've had in a long time. And if you go, don't skip the tempura ice cream donut for dessert. Crispy on the outside, warm and indulgent, it was the perfect sweet ending to an already fantastic meal.

As our time in St. Thomas came to an end, we found ourselves reflecting on everything that makes the U.S. Virgin Islands so special: the pristine beaches, incredible snorkeling, fascinating history, and breathtaking landscapes. It was a trip filled with adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable scenery, leaving us already looking forward to the day we can return.

Need to know

One thing to note when visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands is that renting a car is the easiest way to get around and explore at your own pace, especially on St. Thomas and St. John. Just keep in mind that driving is on the left side of the road, and roads can be steep and winding. It can take a little getting used to at first, but the scenic routes are well worth it!
