Curator’s statement
El Chaltén, in the heart of Argentine Patagonia, is one of the most spectacular hiking destinations in South America. This small, walkable mountain town is surrounded by dramatic granite peaks, glaciers, and turquoise lakes, with many of the region’s most iconic trails starting right from town. It’s the perfect base for exploring Patagonia’s wild landscapes while still enjoying cozy cafés, local restaurants, and a welcoming outdoor culture. For travelers seeking unforgettable hikes and breathtaking scenery, El Chaltén is truly a bucket-list destination and one of my favorite places to recommend in Patagonia.

Things to do in El Chalten, Argentina

Laguna de los Tres Hike. This unforgettable hike leads to one of Patagonia’s most breathtaking viewpoints. After a steady climb through forests and alpine terrain, you’ll arrive at a turquoise glacial lake framed by the towering peaks of Mount Fitz Roy.
Hike to Laguna de los Tres (Mount Fitz Roy): My favorite experience in El Chaltén was hiking to Laguna de los Tres to see Mount Fitz Roy up close. The final stretch is challenging, but reaching the lake and seeing the dramatic granite peaks rising above the water was one of the most unforgettable views I experienced in Patagonia.
Laguna Capri Trail: I loved hiking to Laguna Capri because it offers beautiful views of Mount Fitz Roy without being as demanding as the full Laguna de los Tres hike. It’s a great option for travelers who want incredible scenery with a more moderate effort.
Mirador de los Cóndores & Mirador de las Águilas: These short hikes start right outside town and offer panoramic views of El Chaltén and the surrounding mountains. I found them perfect for a quick hike, especially at sunset.
Laguna Torre Hike: The hike to Laguna Torre is another must-do trail in El Chaltén. When I reached the lake, I was rewarded with incredible views of Cerro Torre and floating glacier ice in the water.
Explore the cafés and restaurants in town: After long hikes, I enjoyed relaxing in the cozy cafés and local restaurants around town. El Chaltén has a great outdoor culture, and it’s the perfect place to recharge after a day on the trails.
Watch the sunrise or sunset over Fitz Roy: Seeing the light change on Mount Fitz Roy during sunrise is something I’ll never forget. The mountain glows with incredible colors, making it one of the most beautiful moments in Patagonia.
Places to eat & drink in El Chalten, Argentina

A memorable meal at Parilla La Oveja Negra. Known for its traditional Patagonian grill, this spot serves incredible slow-roasted lamb, grilled meats and local wine. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a hearty dinner after a day exploring Patagonia.
Lito Restaurant: After a long day of hiking in El Chaltén, I enjoyed having dinner at Lito Restaurant. It’s a cozy spot known for traditional Patagonian dishes and hearty meals, making it a great place to relax and refuel after exploring the trails around Mount Fitz Roy.
Fuegio Bistro: Fuegio Bistro was one of my favorite places for a relaxed dinner in El Chaltén. The restaurant focuses on fresh local ingredients, and the warm atmosphere makes it a perfect place to unwind after a full day of hiking in Patagonia.
PAISA High Mountain Coffee: I loved stopping at PAISA High Mountain Coffee before heading out on the trails. It’s a great café in El Chaltén to enjoy a good cup of coffee, grab a pastry, and fuel up before a day of hiking in Patagonia.
La Cervecería Chaltén: After a long day of hiking in El Chaltén, I enjoyed stopping at La Cervecería Chaltén for a local craft beer. The relaxed atmosphere makes it a great place to celebrate finishing one of Patagonia’s famous hikes.
La Vinería Grill: La Vinería Grill is a great place to try traditional Argentine grilled meats while visiting El Chaltén. I loved enjoying a classic Patagonian dinner here after spending the day exploring the nearby hiking trails.
Maffia Trattoria: Maffia Trattoria is a cozy Italian restaurant in El Chaltén that’s perfect after a long hike. Their fresh pasta and comforting dishes made it one of my favorite spots to relax and recharge in Patagonia.
Need to know
Weather in Patagonia: Weather in El Chaltén can change quickly, even during the summer months. I recommend packing layers, a windproof jacket, and good hiking shoes so you’re prepared for changing conditions.
Getting to El Chaltén: The closest airport is El Calafate (FTE), about a three-hour drive from El Chaltén. Most travelers take a bus between El Calafate and El Chaltén, although renting a car is also an option if you plan to explore more of Patagonia.
Hiking access: One of the best things about El Chaltén is that many of the trailheads start directly from town. This makes it easy to hike some of Patagonia’s most famous trails, including Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre, without needing transportation.
Start early for the best views: Patagonia’s mountains are often covered by clouds later in the day. Starting hikes early in the morning gives you the best chance of clear views of Mount Fitz Roy.
Planning a Patagonia trip: Many travelers combine El Chaltén in Argentina with Torres del Paine in Chile. If you plan to visit both, it’s important to plan transportation and border crossings ahead of time.
