Where to stay

Unlock perks by contacting Madison to book your trip.

Day 1: Exploring the cloud forest

Proof that every hike in Costa Rica comes with surprise friends, including a coati!

Start your day with a hearty breakfast as you need to fuel up before exploring the Curi-Cancha Wildlife Refuge. It truly is a bird-watcher’s paradise. If you’re lucky enough, you may spot an agouti or a coati, two mammals local to Central America.

Later in the day, you’ll experience the cloud forest from the hanging bridges and Sky Tram at Treetopia Park. If you’re feeling adventurous enough, you can go ziplining or experience the 80-foot free-fall drop!

Day 2: Discover the El Tigre waterfalls

One hike, many adventures.

Follow your private tour guide into the cloud forest for a five-mile hike to some of the most beautiful waterfalls you have ever seen. This easy/moderate hike is well worth the journey to the four breathtaking waterfalls, 10 rustic bridges (including hanging bridges), and natural river pools for swimming.

Finish your adventure by horseback or a 4x4 back up the mountain and take in those beautiful views.

Day 3: Make your way to Arenal or La Fortuna

The Arenal Volcano peeking out of the clouds on Lake Arenal. Baby caimans were spotted along the way!

Take the adventurous route to La Fortuna via Jeep-boat-Jeep. This is the quickest (and prettiest) way to travel from Monteverde to La Fortuna.

Because this area is so mountainous, there isn’t a direct route between the two places and the drive around Lake Arenal can take upwards of five hours. So why not cross the lake and spot some Caiman along the way?

Settle into your new hotel, explore the resort, and get a relaxing massage.

Day 4: Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano: worth the hike for this view!

How does a hike to an active volcano sound?

Follow your guide around the Arenal Volcano. Although this volcano is in its resting phase, it is considered an active volcano. Navigate through the lush forest and catch some photos of the volcano from the beautiful viewpoints.

If you’re lucky, you’ll spot some wildlife along the way! Our guide spotted a venomous coral snake! Watch your step!

Day 5: Sarapiquí River rapids

Rafting or swimming? You decide your fate.

Rafting down the Sarapiquí River is perfect for all levels of paddlers, from experts to beginners and families. The action-packed class II and III rapids are an unforgettable experience.

Maybe, with my warning, you won’t fall out of the raft like I did!

The best part? The amazing lunch you are awarded with for completing your adventure!

Day 6: Sloths!

If you're lucky, you might spot a mom and baby sloth!

With the help of your knowledgeable guide on your 1.5-mile hike, you will spot sloths hiding among the vegetation!

Due to its location and type of flora, the trail is also heavily populated with birds and other wildlife, including tree frogs and “jesus lizards!”

Need to know

  • There is no need to convert USD to Costa Rican Colones. Most places will gladly accept USD and major credit cards.

  • Costa Rica is a tropical climate, so expect some rain and humidity. Come prepared with a raincoat and insect repellent with a high percentage of deet.

  • I highly recommend bringing a good camera, binoculars, and comfortable hiking boots and pants.

Pura Vida!
