Advisor - A Slow & Cozy Weekend in the Cotswolds: Quiet Luxury, Country Walks & Fireside Pubs
Curator’s statement

The Cotswolds are my go-to for a true countryside reset—the kind that comes from grand manor houses, muddy boots, long walks through open pastures, and evenings spent fireside at a local pub. I spent a winter weekend here recently with friends, and it was the perfect counterbalance to time in London: slower, softer, and deeply restorative. This itinerary is ideal for couples, friends’ weekends, or repeat UK travelers looking to experience the English countryside at an unhurried pace.

Day 1: Oxford stop, arrival & fireside dining

Ellenborough Park at golden hour

Pick up your rental car in London and head west toward the Cotswolds, with a planned stop in Oxford along the way. Spend a few hours wandering the historic streets, stretching your legs, and grabbing lunch before continuing on to the countryside.

Arrive at Ellenborough Park in the afternoon and take time to settle in before enjoying Afternoon Tea at the hotel—a lovely welcome and a Fora perk when booked through an advisor. After tea, explore the property’s grounds and be sure to stop by the boot room to get properly set up for the countryside walks ahead.

Before dinner, take a short drive into Cheltenham for a gentle evening stroll through town. Then head to The King’s Arms, a classic local pub just down the road from the hotel, for a relaxed, fireside dinner to ease into your first night.

Day 2: Countryside walks, village wandering & local pubs

Start your morning with breakfast at the hotel, included when you book your stay with a Fora advisor. Then pull on your borrowed boots and coat, grab one of the hotel’s trail maps, and set out directly from the property for a countryside walk. We did a 2+ mile loop that took us through open pastures and farmland, passing sheep being herded along the way—pure Cotswolds magic. Take your time, stop for photos, and enjoy the scenery.

After your walk, return to your room for a well-earned reset—this is a perfect moment for a long bath in your beautifully upgraded suite before heading back out.

In the afternoon, explore nearby towns, starting with Broadway, known for its charming high street, bakeries, and excellent independent shops. Stop into Broadway Deli for something casual before browsing antiques and boutiques. On your way back, pass through Winchcombe, a quieter, more local-feeling town that offers a nice contrast to Broadway.

For dinner, drive to Horse and Groom. This is a wonderful place to chat with locals—don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations or stories about the area. Evenings like this are what make the Cotswolds feel so special.

Day 3: Final walks, Burford & the journey home

Enjoy another relaxed breakfast at the hotel, followed by a final country walk before your late check-out. Then begin your drive back toward London, stopping along the way to extend the countryside feeling just a bit longer.

Make time for Burford, a picture-perfect town often favored by celebrities and photographers alike. Grab a savory pasty at Bakery on the Hill, then wander the sloping high street before continuing on.

Arrive back in London refreshed, grounded, and very likely already planning your next countryside escape.

Need to know

  • Getting around: A rental car is strongly recommended for this itinerary. While a weekend without a car is possible in parts of the Cotswolds, having one makes the experience far easier and more flexible.

  • Driving tips: Expect narrow roads, potholes, and two-way traffic on single-lane roads. A reliable GPS is essential.

  • What to pack: Waterproof boots or sturdy walking shoes are a must (many country hotels offer boot rooms). Layers are key—weather can change quickly.

  • When to go: The Cotswolds are wonderful year-round. Winter offers cozy fireside vibes, while spring, summer, and fall bring lush landscapes and longer walking days.

  • Who this is for: Ideal for friends’ weekends, couples, and repeat UK travelers seeking a slower, more restorative pace after time in London.
