Curator’s statement
Cairo is one of those cities that feels chaotic at first, but give it a day, and it completely pulls you in. You’re standing in front of 4,500-year-old pyramids in the morning, and bargaining for handcrafted lanterns in a buzzing market by evening. It’s raw, layered, and deeply cultural, with history that isn’t just preserved, it’s alive. If you lean into the chaos, Cairo becomes unforgettable.

Things to do in Cairo

Evenings at Khan el-Khalili
Explore the Pyramids of Giza
The scale is unreal—you really don’t grasp it until you’re standing next to them. Go early morning to beat the crowds and heat. See the Great Sphinx up close. It’s smaller than you might expect, but there’s something surreal about finally seeing this ancient guardian in real life.
Step into history at the Grand Egyptian Museum
This is where Egypt’s history gets a modern, immersive upgrade. The displays are beautifully curated, and you can easily spend hours here without realizing it.
Get lost in Khan el-Khalili
This market is chaotic in the best way—lanterns, spices, jewelry, and endless little alleys to explore. Bargaining is expected, so have fun with it.
Visit the Egyptian Museum
If you like a more old-school, packed-with-history experience, this museum delivers. It’s less polished but feels incredibly authentic.
Head up to the Cairo Citadel
The views over Cairo are worth it alone, but the architecture—especially the Mosque of Muhammad Ali—is stunning.
Take a Nile River cruise
A slower, more relaxed way to see Cairo. Think sunset views, city lights, and a mix of music and local performances.
Places to eat & drink in Cairo

Luuma
A more modern, aesthetic spot with a refined menu and great presentation. Perfect if you want a slightly elevated dining experience without losing local flavors.
Felfela
A Cairo classic—quirky interiors, traditional Egyptian dishes, and a very old-school charm. Great for trying authentic flavors in a fun, slightly chaotic setting.
Abou El Sid
Ideal for a proper sit-down Egyptian meal with a cozy, upscale vibe.
Koshary Abou Tarek
This is the spot for koshari—Egypt’s ultimate comfort food. It’s quick, no-frills, and absolutely worth it.
Zooba
A trendy take on Egyptian street food with a clean, modern twist. Perfect for a casual bite between sightseeing.
Sequoia
Set along the Nile, this is where you go for a more scenic, relaxed meal. Great ambiance, especially in the evening.
Naguib Mahfouz Cafe
Located right in the heart of the market, it’s ideal for a break while exploring. Expect traditional dishes and a very atmospheric setting.
Pier 88
A stylish option for dinner or drinks with a more international menu. Good for a night out when you want something more polished.
Need to know
Cairo is intense—traffic, noise, and crowds are all part of the experience, and the key is to go with the flow rather than resist it. Start your days early, especially when visiting outdoor sites like the pyramids, to avoid the heat and peak crowds. Hiring a local guide, even for half a day, can make a big difference in navigating both the history and the usual tourist hassles. Dress modestly, particularly when visiting mosques or older parts of the city, and keep some cash handy as markets and smaller shops don’t always accept cards. Most importantly, don’t overpack your itinerary. Cairo is best enjoyed when you leave room to wander.
