Curator’s statement
Dominica offers a different experience from other Caribbean Islands—visitors will find raw natural beauty, adventure, and authenticity, rather than large resorts and crowded beaches. Our family was looking for something unique for spring break, and Dominica certainly delivered. As we were preparing for landing, we looked out the window to see mountains and waterfalls surrounding us—just like Jurassic Park! That was just the beginning of an unforgettable week that left us in awe of what the island and its kind people gave us.

Things to do in Dominica

Scenes from the Boiling Lake Hike are reminiscent of Kauai, HI
Hike to Boiling Lake: You must go with a guide. This was the most challenging, yet unforgettable hike I have ever completed. A seven-hour round-trip trek through rainforest and volcanic rock to one of the world’s largest boiling lakes. You will be so proud of yourself when this day is over!
Titou Gorge: After you finish the challenging Boiling Lake hike, take the locals up on the offer to see Titou Gorge before you get back in the car. This is where you swim through a narrow volcanic gorge with towering rock walls and warm water to reach a hidden waterfall. It feels adventurous but refreshing after a long day on the trail. This is also where one of the Pirates of the Caribbean scenes was filmed.
Swim at Trafalgar Falls: There are 365 rivers on the island, which result in beautiful waterfalls. Trafalgar Falls are the most famous of them all, probably because they are easy to get to and provide a viewing deck along with short hikes and swimming opportunities in the falls.
Snorkel or dive Champagne Reef: Here you can experience underwater volcanic vents that release streams of bubbles, creating a natural “champagne” effect in the sea. The snorkeling is just off the main road, making it an easy excursion. If you are a diver, there are several outfitters in the area and I hear the diving is excellent.
Soak in hot springs: Relax in natural geothermal pools found around the island, especially near Trafalgar Falls and Wotten Waven.
Guided boat tour of the Indian River: This is a slow ride through mangroves on a quiet river tour where you’ll see tropical birds, lush vegetation, iguanas, and a Pirates of the Caribbean filming location. You will make a stop at a Bush Bar for a quick rum punch or beer before heading back to the mouth of the river.
Explore Cabrits National Park: Hike rainforest trails, tour historic Fort Shirley, and enjoy panoramic views of Prince Rupert Bay.
Visit Red Rocks: An easy hike out to the most dramatic red stone cliffs where you can watch the waves crash against the volcanic rock and see the spear fisherman catch dinner. On the walk back to the car, you can grab a beer and fresh fish sandwich at the restaurant, but make sure you have cash on hand (or PayPal).
Places to eat & drink in Dominica

Rainbow Beach Bar, just off the sand!
Balisier (Fort Young Hotel, Roseau): If you are staying in or near the capital of Roseau, try the restaurant at the Fort Young Hotel, as it is a polished dining experience, offering elevated Caribbean cuisine with beautiful harbor views.
Pagua Bay Bar & Grill (near Marigot): A standout for both food and setting, with oceanfront views and a relaxed-but-upscale vibe. They are known for their American fare with a Caribbean twist, including excellent grilled fish, cocktails, and sunset dining.
Rainbow Beach Bar & Grill (Calibishie): This is a must in Calibishie—a laid-back beachfront spot known for fresh seafood, lobster when in season, grilled chicken, and cold drinks right on the sand. It’s unpretentious, scenic, and perfect after exploring Red Rocks or Batibou Beach. The owners and servers are lovely!
Batibou Beach: This is one of the most beautiful beaches I have seen. You can get dropped off at the gate and hike down, pay the nominal fee to use the property and head to the seating area. There are two ladies who set up a beach bar and cafe on this incredible beach, serving food that people call “heavenly”. They are not there everyday but when they are, it is the BEST spot on the island.
