Curator’s statement
Canberra completely surprised me. It’s where nature and creativity intertwine in the most unexpected ways. Between mornings floating over misty valleys watching kangaroos hop through the grasses, afternoons sipping crisp Riesling among the homesteads, and evenings dining beside wildlife, this capital city feels anything but corporate. Rooted in community, the city’s culinary scene is inspiring, some of my favorites being truffle farms, local chocolatiers, and craft breweries. Surrounded by trails that wind through eucalyptus forests and open bushland, Canberra invites you to slow down, reconnect, and fall back in love with travel, with your person, and with life’s little luxuries.

Day 1: Glassblowing & wine tour

Lunch overlooking the vines at Shaw Estate
Arrive in Canberra and make your way toward Kingston. The first stop of the day is Canberra Glassworks, a space that blends art, heat, and imagination under one roof. After stepping inside the historic power station, we were greeted by Brooke, whose enthusiasm instantly matched the creative energy of the space. As we walked upstairs and through the open gallery, we watched glassblowers shape molten glass into glowing works of art and took a seat in the viewing area to watch the process unfold. I loved getting a behind-the-scenes look at how each piece comes to life before creating my own glass tile to take home as a memory of the day. The experience is hands-on, vibrant and offers a variety of classes and events worth exploring before your visit.
From there, spend the afternoon exploring the Canberra Wine District with Van Du Vin, a boutique tour company founded and led by Laura, whose warmth and knowledge make you feel like you’re traveling with an old friend. We were picked up right from Canberra Glassworks and set off through the rolling countryside, passing vineyards dotted with hundreds of kangaroos along the way. The region is known for its cool-climate wines, particularly Riesling, and the cellar doors here have a way of making you feel instantly at home. Our afternoon included a long, leisurely lunch at Shaw Estate, where I found my favorite wine of the entire trip. From there, Laura led us to Murrumbateman Chocolate Co., where we met the owner, Yasmin Coe—a chocolatier whose passion fills her cozy rural shop with warmth and charm. Between the wine, the laughter and the sweetness of the day, it felt like one of those slow, joyful afternoons that remind you why travel feels so good.
Return to the city before sunset and check into Hotel Realm, a beautiful property in the Barton precinct known for having the best spa in Canberra. Unwind with a drink and dinner at Ostani Bar.
Day 2: Hot air balloon & National Museum of Australia

Sunrise over Canberra, floating through the quiet sky with Balloon Aloft.
Wake before dawn for one of the most magical experiences in Canberra, a sunrise flight with Balloon Aloft. We met the crew around 4:30 am, the early morning air still cool and filled with quiet anticipation. Excitement mixed with nerves as we boarded the bus to the takeoff field, watching the first streaks of color paint the horizon. As the balloon inflated and we climbed into the basket, the world below began to glow.
Watching the city wake up from above is pure wonder. As the first light spread across the hills and Lake Burley Griffin shimmered below, we spotted kangaroos grazing in the open fields and the city’s architecture wrapped in mist. Floating quietly through the sky felt peaceful and grounding—one of those rare moments that makes you feel completely present. Upon landing, we toasted with champagne as the sun fully broke over the horizon, a simple but beautiful tradition that marked the perfect ending to an unforgettable morning.
After the flight, enjoy breakfast back at Hotel Realm or stroll through the Little Burley Market for coffee and fresh pastries by the lake. Canberra’s weekends are made for slow mornings like this—the kind where you linger in the sunshine, surrounded by locals and good conversation.
Late morning, make your way to the National Museum of Australia for a specialized guided tour. The museum sits along the shores of Lake Burley Griffin and tells the story of Australia through its people, art, and landscapes. The private tour offers a deeper perspective on First Nations history and the country’s modern narrative, tying together everything that makes Canberra such a thoughtful and inspiring capital.
Before leaving, stop by Beltana Farm for lunch. Set among rolling hills in nearby Pialligo, the farmhouse restaurant focuses on seasonal ingredients, with truffle trees and a kitchen that celebrates what’s grown right on site. It’s the perfect last taste of Canberra—local, creative, and full of heart.
Need to know
Canberra may be Australia’s capital, but it doesn’t feel like a big city. It’s creative, calm, and surrounded by nature in every direction. Whether you come for the food, the art, or the wildlife, you’ll leave with a deep sense of peace and probably a few kangaroo sightings you’ll never forget.
