Advisor - Fiji, Party of One: Four Days Solo on Viti Levu
Curator’s statement

This itinerary was inspired by the magic of falling in love with Fiji—not once, but twice—on solo trips that reminded me how powerful it is to travel on your own terms. From lush gardens and island day trips to spa nights under the stars, every moment felt like a personal reminder to slow down and soak it all in. Whether it’s your first solo trip or your fifteenth, Fiji has a way of making you feel held, seen, and completely at ease. And the best part? With direct overnight flights from the US West Coast, this kind of reset is totally possible over a long weekend—no extended PTO required.

Day 1: Arrival in Nadi, Garden of the Sleeping Giant & mud pools

Incredible foliage in the Garden of the Sleeping Giant

After an overnight flight from LAX, you’ll land in Nadi around 6 am. Pick up a rental car at the airport (heads up: Fiji drives on the left side!) and start the day with breakfast at Bulaccino, a local café with great coffee and a relaxed vibe.

Next, head to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant. This lush, orchid-filled sanctuary is peaceful and beautiful—perfect for wandering solo. The forest is full of birdsong and quiet trails, and you might even strike up a conversation with a few fellow travelers. There’s a short hike up the hill—not too tough, but the humidity makes it feel like you’ve earned your next stop.

Before continuing to the mud pools, it’s worth noting that the surrounding area is mostly made up of local villages, and restaurant options are limited. Thankfully, there’s a small café along the way where you can stop for a casual lunch with stunning views—a perfect pause between adventures.

Then it’s time for a visit to the nearby Sabeto Hot Spring Mud Pool, where you can treat yourself to a massage and a dip in the thermal springs. It’s the ultimate jet lag cure. Afterward, drive to Denarau and check in at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa, your home base for a restful night (and maybe a cocktail by the pool).

Day 2: Island adventure by the sea & Thai dinner at Maravu

Day sailing tour with Whale's Tale

Today’s all about getting out on the water. Choose between a scuba diving tour or a full-day sailing trip—either way, you’ll explore beyond the main island and soak up Fiji’s famous turquoise waters.

Certified divers can head out with Purple Turtle Dive Shop for a morning dive at nearby reefs. Expect clear visibility and vibrant marine life. If you prefer to stay above the surface, book a sailing trip with Captain Cook Cruises or Whale’s Tale. Both offer large, lively boats with music, drinks, and a visit to a private island, complete with a traditional kava ceremony and catered lunch.

After returning to Denarau, wind down at the Sofitel pool. Grab a lounger, order something tropical, and enjoy the relaxed resort vibes. For dinner, head next door to the Hilton for a solo-friendly sunset meal at Maravu, known for its beachfront Thai food and chilled-out atmosphere.

Day 3: Beach day at Natadola & spa escape at the Shangri-La

Private section of Natadola Beach at the Intercontinental

Check out of the Sofitel and hit the road—today is all about treating yourself. A 90-minute drive south brings you to the InterContinental Fiji, where you can purchase a pool day pass that’s essentially free (the cost is credited back to you for food and drinks). Spend a few hours enjoying the luxe pool scene and the soft white sands of Natadola Beach, one of the most stunning stretches of coastline in Fiji.

From there, continue the scenic drive to Shangri-La Yanuca Island, home to what might just be Fiji’s best-kept secret: the Chi Spa Overnight Experience: Dusk Till Dawn. This isn’t just a spa treatment—it’s a full-on solo sanctuary. You’ll check into your own private bungalow complete with massage tables, sauna, and an oceanfront patio.

While your space is being prepared, relax in an outdoor bathtub with fresh fruit in hand. Then step into the private steam room to soften your skin before indulging in a one-hour body scrub followed by a one-hour full-body massage. Afterward, dinner is served on your personal patio overlooking the water. You’ll end the night completely blissed out—and sleep better than you have in years.

Day 4: Spa morning, local shops & return to Nadi

Private bungalow at the Chi Spa

Wake up slowly and enjoy a fresh breakfast served on your private patio at Chi Spa—yes, it’s just as dreamy as it sounds. After breakfast, ease into your final treatment: a one-hour facial that leaves your skin glowing and refreshed.

It may sound like a splurge, but the entire Chi Spa overnight experience is surprisingly affordable—less than what many US hotels charge for a standard 60-minute massage.

Since your skin will be freshly exfoliated (and sun-sensitive), keep things low-key for the rest of the day. With a late evening flight back to LAX, you’ve still got time to explore. Head a bit farther down Queen’s Road to the small town of Sigatoka, where you can grab a coffee and chat with locals for a more authentic glimpse of Fijian life.

Before returning to Nadi, make one last stop at Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park. A leisurely hike offers sweeping views of the dunes as they roll right into the sea—a peaceful and beautiful way to close out the trip.

Drive back to Nadi, return the rental car, and catch your flight home—rested, recharged, and full of solo travel magic.

Bonus day: Malamala Island Beach Club

Malamala Island

If you’re able to stretch your trip to five days, I highly recommend spending a day at Malamala Island Beach Club while you’re still based in Denarau. Just a 30-minute high-speed catamaran ride from Port Denarau, this private island is the perfect blend of relaxation and resort-style fun.

Upgrade to a poolside daybed for front-row ocean views and easy access to the water (and cocktails). Spend the day however you like: swimming, paddleboarding, snorkling, or enjoying a long, lazy lunch. The vibe is laid-back but social, and it’s a solo travel favorite for good reason.

You’ll return to Denarau in the late afternoon with plenty of time to grab dinner nearby and enjoy one more night in paradise.

Need to know

  • Bula! You’ll hear this joyful greeting everywhere in Fiji—it means “hello” and is a big part of the warm, welcoming culture. Don’t be shy—say it back!

  • Driving: Fiji uses left-side driving. If you’re not comfortable behind the wheel, taxis are a reliable option. Just be sure to negotiate and agree on the fare before your ride. Note: Taxis from Denarau often have fixed, higher rates. Also, keep in mind that driving can take longer than expected due to slower speed limits through local villages—leave yourself plenty of time.

  • Cash: Always carry some Fijian dollars for taxis, tips, and meals at local spots. Many smaller businesses and drivers don’t accept cards.

  • Credit cards: Most resorts and hotels are cashless, accepting cards only—and usually adding a three percent service fee on all transactions.
